My research interests are in immigration experience and policy during the second half of the nineteenth century. I study the stories of migrants themselves, the policies passed by state and federal entities, and viewpoints of both pro-immigration and nativist Americans. My particular interests are in how issues of gender, family, and sexuality shaped both immigrant experience and policies and their enforcement. Recent projects have been about Southern immigration policies during Reconstruction and how frontier states’ migrant recruitment materials spoke to and of women and family.

After completing my PhD, I plan to work in academic publishing. I currently work on the journal Modern American History, have served as a proofreader for numerous books and journals, and have held positions with several university presses.
