PhD in American and New England Studies Admissions

The PhD program only accepts applications for fall admission, and the deadline to submit your application is December 15.  Please note the deadline change from years past. Applicants can access the online application from the Graduate School site: Online application form.

Admission is competitive. We accept both post-Bachelors and post-Masters students to the PhD program. Our admissions committee carefully assesses each candidate’s qualifications on an individual basis. The GRE exam is no longer required. We look closely at your college record, recommendations, writing sample, and personal statement. We make every effort to accommodate applicants who may be returning to study after a period of time spent away from the academy.

For more information about the PhD program see this year’s brochure.

All newly admitted PhD students receive a five-year fellowship from GRS. More information on fellowships and funding for PhDs can be found here.

The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences also offers Application Fee Waivers for individuals who participate in specific programs, are from under-represented  groups, or have documented financial hardship. Please visit the GRS website to see if you qualify and apply for the fee waiver.
