Koritha Mitchell\u00a0is a literary historian,\u00a0cultural\u00a0critic, and professor of English. She is the feminist\u00a0scholar\u00a0who coined the term know-your-place aggression<\/a><\/u>\u00a0to emphasize that marginalized groups are attacked for succeeding, not because they have done something wrong.\u00a0Mitchell is\u00a0author of the award-winning book Living with Lynching<\/a><\/u><\/em>\u00a0and author of the 2020 book From Slave Cabins to the White House<\/a><\/u><\/em>. She is also editor of Frances E. W. Harper\u2019s 1892 novel Iola Leroy<\/a><\/u><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0of\u00a0the first book-length autobiography by a formerly enslaved African American woman, Harriet Jacobs\u2019s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl<\/a><\/u><\/em>\u00a0<\/a><\/u>(1861). In\u00a02014, Mitchell lectured at the Library of Congress<\/a>, and in\u00a02018, she was named Undergraduate Professor of the Year by Ohio State University\u2019s English Undergraduate Organization. Her public commentary has appeared in outlets\u00a0such as Time<\/a><\/u><\/em>, Black Perspectives<\/a><\/u><\/em>, The Washington Post<\/a><\/u><\/em>,\u00a0the Los Angeles Review of Books<\/a><\/u><\/em>, MSNBC<\/a><\/u><\/em>, CNN<\/a><\/u><\/em>, and Good Morning America<\/a><\/u><\/em>.\u00a0In October 2023, she was recognized as a champion of women in the public sphere with a Progressive Women’s Voices IMPACT Award<\/a><\/u>\u00a0from the Women’s Media Center.<\/p>\n

Mitchell’s scholarly articles include \u201cJames Baldwin, Performance Theorist, Sings\u00a0the Blues for Mister Charlie,<\/em>\u201d published by American Quarterly, <\/em>and \u201cLove in Action,\u201d which appeared in Callaloo<\/em>\u00a0and draws parallels between lynching and violence against LGBTQ communities. <\/em>After 18 years at Ohio State University, Mitchell now teaches at Boston University.
