Background

Val Nolen received her Master Project Management (MPM) training from George Washington University and Boston University. Ms. Nolen has more than 12 years of first-hand caregiving experience. She consults with families, refers them to appropriate resources for support, and participates in workshops on caregiving.  Ms. Nolen joined the Alzheimer’s Disease Center (ADRC) in 2002 as a Research Associate.  Val is a Senior Program Manager – Global Clinical Liaison working with Researchers and serves as the  Senior Facilitator with Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Community Action Council (BU ADRC CAC) Chairperson.  Ms. Nolen collaborates with: City of Boston, Multi Coalition on Aging, MA/NH Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts General Hospital Aging Brain Study, Senior Living Residences (SLR) and, Boston Urban League, Community Leaders with a direct focus on Research, Education, Awareness, and Outreach to families and all communities.

ADC Role

Ms. Nolen facilitates the ADRC’s Community Action Council and serves as the liaison to community leaders, clinicians, and educators to support AD research, education, and awareness. She consults with families, refers them to appropriate resources for support, and participates in workshops on Caregiving. Serve as Chairperson for over 20 years with clinicians,  in-kind partnerships, and community leaders. As well as, meeting with our legislators Massachusetts Congressman and Senators.

Research Interests

Ms. Nolen has a strong interest in minority outreach and education programs. She is also interested in diet and lifestyle interventions designed to slow the progression of AD and to reduce risk in those unaffected by the disease.

Memberships

Ms. Nolen is a Board member of the National Caucus on Black Aging (NCBA), an organization dedicated to the health and well-being of African Americans, and a Board member of the National Brain Health Initiative in partnership with the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Additionally, Ms. Nolen is a member of the following organizations: the Statewide Alzheimer’s Advisory Council; the American Society on Aging (ASA), an organization dedicated to service issues for elders; the Liberty Alzheimer’s Partnership (LAP), an organization that supports the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association and is dedicated to helping persons with memory loss, their families, and caregivers; and the National Indian Council on Aging (NICOA), an organization dedicated to the health and well-being of Native Americans. Ms. Nolen is also a NEAC – New England Area Conference Member – NAACP.
