{"id":9008,"date":"2020-10-05T16:07:20","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T20:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/alumni\/?p=9008"},"modified":"2020-10-05T16:15:12","modified_gmt":"2020-10-05T20:15:12","slug":"combining-research-and-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/alumni\/2020\/10\/05\/combining-research-and-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Combining research and care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After earning her bachelor\u2019s degree at Boston University, Minh-Thuy Nguyen (ENG\u201915, MED\u201921) knew that returning to BU\u2019s diverse and welcoming campus to study medicine was the best fit for her. This time, thanks to financial aid that makes room in her budget for housing, she no longer has to commute the two hours between Boston and her hometown of Lowell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is simply liberating,\u201d says Nguyen, who hopes to become a physician-scientist in order to serve the most vulnerable patients. \u201cMy scholarship means that I can live a walkable distance from school and get the full experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Nguyen, that experience includes participating in the BU for Down Syndrome (BUDS) program as well as many research projects. \u201cThe more medicine I learn, the more I am learning that there are many questions without good answers,\u201d she says. \u201cWell thought out research will help many people, especially underserved patient populations.\u201d Her dream job would satisfy both her passion for research and her desire to take care of those who may have been overlooked, and she appreciates the people in her life who have allowed her to pursue what she loves most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my family moved to the US from Vietnam, my parents worked long hours as assemblers in various factories to support our family of five,\u201d says Nguyen.
