For Black students, succeeding at a predominantly White institution (PWI) like BU brings unique challenges. Students of color at PWIs report <a href=\"https:\/\/edtrust.org\/press-room\/students-at-pwis-dont-feel-welcome-on-campus\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">lacking a sense of belonging<\/a>, lack of representation, feelings of isolation, and experiencing harmful interactions and micro aggressions. Despite the obstacles they have encountered along the way, BU\u2019s Black alumni entrepreneurs never gave up on pursuing their dreams. Now, they\u2019re making their mark across industries, turning their passions into businesses that uplift communities, celebrate culture, and drive meaningful change. Whether they\u2019re empowering Black investors, coaching leaders, breaking barriers to educational access or reimagining storytelling through design, their work reflects a commitment to excellence and community. Meet just a few of the many Black alumni entrepreneurs who are shaping the future\u2014one bold venture at a time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">1. With services ranging from LinkedIn consulting to social media training, digital marketing consulting, and more, LiveWire provides strategies that align with clients\u2019 goals. Shannon Finney (STH\u201996): Founder, Shannon Finney Photography<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shannon Finney has done it all with her business, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shannonfinneyphotography.com\/index\"><span>Shannon Finney Photography<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014from photographing US presidents and Hollywood stars, to weddings, B\u2019nai Mitzvahs, and family portraits.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s an intimate family moment or a high-profile event, Finney is passionate about storytelling through stills. She highlights the beauty in both everyday life and once-in-a-lifetime occasions through every photograph.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">3. As the founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stackwellcapital.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Stackwell Capital<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a user-friendly investment app, Rozier-Byrd is empowering the Black community with financial tools and guidance. Through his work, Rozier-Byrd aims to help users build generational wealth and financial wisdom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">4. Shameka Coleman (Wheelock\u201914): Founder, Volunteers Incorporating Black Excellence (VIBE)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">While at BU Wheelock, Shameka Coleman learned the importance of community. Now, she\u2019s paying it forward through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wearevibe.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">VIBE<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a nonprofit that connects volunteers from the African Diaspora\u2014and allies\u2014to meaningful service opportunities. VIBE creates inclusive spaces for giving back while celebrating Black excellence in action.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">5. Dr. John Polk (MED\u201974, Wheelock\u201913, SSW\u201915): Founder, Directions in Coaching<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. John Polk has worn many hats\u2014from cardiothoracic surgeon to life coach. After earning three BU degrees, he founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/directionsincoaching.com\/index.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Directions in Coaching<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, helping professionals and organizations navigate life changes and reach their goals. His unique journey from the operating room to coaching sessions showcases his lifelong commitment to helping others thrive.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">6. Isioma Utomi (ENG\u201907): CEO, Catalyst Experience Solutions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/isiomautomi.com\/about\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Isioma Utomi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is the founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catalystxs.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Catalyst Experience Experience Solutions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a consulting firm that empowers leaders and organizations to achieve their highest potential. Through her business, Utomi advises entrepreneurs and executives on how to work smarter and more effectively to achieve their goals. Staying true to her engineering background and African heritage, she works to amplify the voices of women in the African tech startup space by spearheading events like the Women Who Launch summit at Lagos Startup Week.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">7. Ivellisse Morales (COM\u201912): Founder &amp; CEO, Bombilla<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ivellisse Morales is driven by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/alumni\/2020\/06\/17\/learning-to-be-lit-on-purpose-as-a-social-entrepreneur\/?utm_medium=bualumni&amp;utm_source=link&amp;utm_campaign=website_bualumni&amp;utm_term=podcast&amp;utm_content=lit_on_purpose_podcast\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">storytelling with purpose.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> After graduating from BU, she honed her skills at world-renowned firms and organizations like IDEO, Year Up, Ogilvy, and more. In 2018, Morales launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bombilla.co\/about\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bombilla<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (which means \u201clightbulb\u201d in Spanish), a branding and design agency focused on social change. Its mission is to reimagine the creative agency world and amplify diverse voices through bold, representative storytelling.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">8. Shironda White (Questrom\u201918): Founder &amp; CEO, Cupcake Therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">During her time at Questrom, Shironda White honed her business skills\u2014and her sweet tooth. A businesswoman and self-proclaimed \u201cfoodie with a lot of allergies,\u201d White founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cupcaketherapyboston.com\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cupcake Therapy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a tree nut-free and peanut-free cupcakery. Specializing in made-to-order cupcakes made from high-quality ingredients, Cupcake Therapy offers nut-free, dairy-free and vegan options to ensure that everyone can enjoy a delicious treat.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">9. Based in Boston, the store is known for its unique approach to wine selection, making it easier (and more fun) for everyone to find the perfect bottle. For TJ, it\u2019s about more than wine\u2014it\u2019s about building community. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">10. Through educational programming, Allen is working to diversify leadership pipelines by helping underrepresented students access grad school opportunities. Sydney Simone Gary (SHA\u201916): Founder, Simone The Label<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sydney Simone Gary\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonelabel.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOoolnnDT_UOX_QmpTSBPJXPt_KHZnDMT1Y6dv-wo3LQUnOlRFddK\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Simone The Label<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> celebrates beauty, connection, and self-expression through tarnish-free, hypoallergenic jewelry.
