Returning to Boston University\u2019s Charles River campus after many years can stir up a flood of nostalgia\u2014bringing back memories of late-night study sessions, early morning classes, sports games, hangouts, and the local restaurants that became go-to spots in between. For many alums, these off-campus restaurants played a significant role in shaping their college experience. You might remember some of these restaurants as places where you laughed with friends over a quick bite or scarfed down food before rushing to your next exam; some of these spots you may have never heard of. Whether you’re looking to revisit your old haunts, or you\u2019re curious to discover the new establishments that have opened since your BU days, here’s a mix of classics and exciting additions to check out!<\/p>\n

Gone But Not Forgotten<\/h2>\n

T\u2019s Pub<\/h3>\n

For over 30 years, T\u2019s Pub was a gathering spot for BU students and Boston locals alike. Known for its classic bar food, lively atmosphere, and interactive events\u2014including sports game broadcasts\u2014it became a community hub. Although it closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the space on West Campus has since welcomed Gopchang Story<\/span><\/a>, a Korean barbecue restaurant.<\/p>\n

Scoozi\u2019s<\/h3>\n

Situated across from the Questrom School of Business on East Campus, Scoozi\u2019s was an Italian gem that became a favorite hangout for BU students. Its cozy atmosphere and mouthwatering menu, featuring 16 different kinds of panini<\/span><\/a>, made it the perfect spot for casual meals. Though it sadly closed its doors in 2019, the memories of its delicious food and warm, inviting vibe still hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved it.<\/p>\n

Deli Haus<\/h3>\n

Located in Kenmore Square, Deli Haus was a late-night diner known for its comfort food and peculiar creations, such as the fried banana, bacon, and peanut butter sandwich, the Guinness float (<\/span>a pint of Guinness with a scoop of chocolate ice cream<\/a>), and many others. Open until 3 am, <\/span>it attracted night owls from nearby nightlife spots like The Rat. When Deli Haus closed in 2001, it marked the end of Kenmore\u2019s gritty, underground scene.<\/p>\n

Roast Beast<\/h3>\n

Roast Beast opened its doors in 2011 and quickly became famous for its towering roast beef sandwiches and bold flavors. Founded by alum DJ Lawton (Questrom\u201909)<\/span>, Roast Beast was cherished by both students and faculty. However, a city dispute over fire safety led to its sudden closure in 2019. In an effort to pass the torch, Lawton put the brand and recipes up for sale<\/a> for anyone who may be interested in taking over Roast Beast\u2014however, there are no records indicating that the assets were ever bought. Though it remains a fixture of BU\u2019s dining-scene past, Roast Beast\u2019s overstuffed sandwiches still bring back fond memories for its former loyal customers.<\/p>\n

Classic Favorites<\/h2>\n

T Anthony\u2019s<\/h3>\n

A West Campus favorite since 1976, T Anthony’s<\/span><\/a> has long been the hot spot for BU students craving pizza. Its mellow atmosphere and budget-friendly menu make it the perfect choice for a quick bite before class or a post-hockey game hangout. Open until 2 am, T Anthony\u2019s is sure to satisfy students looking to power up for all-nighters or unwind after a hectic day.<\/p>\n

The Dugout<\/h3>\n

The Dugout<\/span><\/a> has accumulated a rich history in the eleven decades it\u2019s been open\u2014notably, it was issued <\/span>one of the first liquor licenses after the December 1933 repeal of the Volstead Act. To this <\/span>day, The Dugout remains a popular gathering spot\u2014particularly during the Beanpot\u2014and maintains its reputation as a social hub following hockey games.<\/p>\n

Sunset Cantina<\/h3>\n

Sunset Cantina<\/span><\/a> was a longtime favorite until its closure in 2022 following financial struggles exacerbated by the pandemic. Fortunately, BU alum Catarina Chang (SHA’11)<\/span><\/a> and her partners stepped up to revive revitalize the classic West Campus spot. This Mexican restaurant offers everything from classic, savory burritos and tacos to sweet dulce de leche churros.<\/p>\n

Eastern Standard<\/h3>\n

Eastern Standard<\/span><\/a> first opened its doors in 2005 and offered Boston University students and their visiting families an upscale dining experience. Beloved by many alumni, it unfortunately closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, in October 2023, the restaurant made a much-anticipated return, bringing back its delicious food and sophisticated atmosphere. Eastern Standard is now located at 775 Beacon St.\u2014a short distance from its original location.<\/p>\n

Cornwall\u2019s<\/h3>\n

Cornwall\u2019s<\/span><\/a> is a family-owned bar in Kenmore Square with a laid-back English pub atmosphere. Founded in 1973 by John and Pam Beale, Cornwall\u2019s is now run by their nephews JR and Billy, and niece Elizabeth. Just steps from Fenway Park, the pub is known for its delicious food and drinks, making it a cherished member of BU\u2019s restaurant scene.<\/p>\n

Saxbys Coffee<\/h3>\n

Situated in the new Duan Family Center for Computing and Data Sciences on Central Campus, Saxbys<\/span><\/a> has become a go-to for coffee breaks between classes. With its convenient location, it\u2019s a great spot to study, catch up with friends, or grab a quick bite. Its popularity often means long lines of students waiting to order, so if you\u2019re in a rush, it\u2019s a good idea to plan ahead and place an order online.<\/p>\n

Life Alive<\/h3>\n

Located near the Amory MBTA station, Life Alive<\/a> has been serving healthy, flavorful meals since 2018. Their plant-based, organic dishes are fresh and satisfying, with the Autumn Falafel grain bowl being a standout. The relaxing ambiance also makes it a great place to study or relax with friends.<\/p>\n

Noodle St<\/h3>\n

Named a Grub Street 2014 standout, Noodle St<\/span><\/a> has been serving up authentic Thai flavors on Comm. Ave near BU\u2019s East Campus for the past decade. Its diverse menu and casual vibe have made it a reliable spot for students and alumni looking for a flavorful, comforting meal just steps from campus.<\/p>\n

Otto Pizza<\/h3>\n

Otto Pizza has been offering mouth-wateringly delicious slices and whole pies since 2012. Known for its quick service and great selection of local craft beer and wine, Otto was named one of the 10 best slice shops in New England by the Boston Globe<\/i><\/a>.<\/span> The next time you find yourself on Comm. Ave, stop by for a taste of this local favorite.<\/p>\n

Nud Pob<\/h3>\n

Since 2011, Nud Pob<\/span><\/a> has been a gem among BU students craving authentic Thai cuisine. Located at 738 Commonwealth Ave, this family-run spot is known for its quick service and affordable, flavorful dishes. Whether you\u2019re a BU alum revisiting campus or discovering it for the first time, Nud Pob remains a must-visit. The Pad Thai with peanut sauce is some of the best around.<\/p>\n

The food scene around Boston University is constantly evolving\u2014with old favorites disappearing and new restaurants opening to take their place. But one thing remains consistent: hungry students, faculty, staff, and returning alums.
