Global Days of Service
The Global Days of Service provides for a cohesive and organized global effort to further the ethic of service encouraged and demonstrated by every student, parent, alumnus/a, employee, and friend of Boston University. It also offers a unique opportunity for current BU students to work with former students and for alumni to (re)connect with fellow alumni while giving back to their local, national, and international communities.
About the Global Day of Service
Boston University’s commitment to service dates back to its founding fathers in 1839. They spoke of a University engaged in service to and in collaboration with the city of Boston. The University’s third president, Lemuel Murlin, described an institution “in the city, in service to the city.” After 140 years of fulfilling the mission of service locally, the University is heightening pursuit of its mission globally. With 288,000 alumni residing in all 50 states and more than 100 different countries, the potential to affect communities worldwide, in a positive and meaningful way, is enormous. This unique combination—a vital tradition of service and a nearly limitless potential for global reach—has driven the BU Alumni Association to establish the annual Boston University Global Day of Service.
How It Works
Service-minded participants volunteering on their own or with groups of family and friends work with BU to organize service sites around the world. The event provides a cohesive and organized global effort to further the ethic of service encouraged and demonstrated by the BU family. It also offers a unique opportunity for current Boston University students to work with alumni—and for alumni to reconnect with their former classmates while giving back to their communities. The tangible impact on each community and the magnitude of volunteerism defines the day.
