At Boston University, our relationship with our alumni, parents, donors and friends is important to us. Collecting and maintaining personal information about you allows us to better communicate with you and engage you with the University in meaningful ways.
We are committed to respecting and safeguarding your privacy. With that in mind, we’ve also included a Privacy Notice to clarify what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it.
The Boston University Alumni Online Community is provided by the Boston University Alumni Association (BUAA) and is designed to facilitate communication among alumni for personal and University-related purposes. To safeguard the operation of the Alumni Online Community, the BUAA has adopted the following guidelines and policies.
Guidelines & policies for proper use
Information available on the Alumni Online Community is intended for the private use of Boston University alumni and for University-related purposes. Users of the Alumni Online Community must abide by the following rules:
A. Unauthorized use of information available on the Alumni Online Community for commercial, political, or business purposes, such as selling products or sending broadcast email, is strictly prohibited.
B. Use of communications available through the Alumni Online Community for any commercial, public, or political purposes is strictly prohibited. Prohibited activities include, but are not limited to, solicitations for commercial services and mass mailings for commercial purposes.
C. Members may download or copy any downloadable materials displayed on the Alumni Online Community for home, non-commercial, and personal use only and must maintain all copyright, trademark, and other notices contained in such material and they agree to abide by all additional copyright notices or restrictions contained in any material accessed through the Alumni Online Community.
D. Members shall not restrict or inhibit any other user from enjoying any service offered through the Alumni Online Community, and shall not post obscene materials or use abusive, defamatory, profane, or threatening language of any kind. Additionally, users shall not upload, transmit, distribute, or otherwise publish any materials containing a virus or any other harmful component.
E. All aliases adopted by Alumni Online Community members are subject to approval by the BUAA.
Neither Boston University nor the BUAA are responsible for the content of the information available on, and have no obligation to monitor the use of, the Alumni Online Community. Boston University and the BUAA make no representations relating to member use of the Alumni Online Community or concerning the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any information found on the site. The BUAA is not responsible for screening communications and will not actively monitor the use of the online directory. For this reason, it is essential that the alumni users of the Alumni Online Community report any abuse or misuse of the Alumni Online Community by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Participation in the Alumni Online Community is a privilege. The BUAA and Boston University reserve the right to suspend or terminate the accounts of any individuals who misuse the information contained in the Alumni Online Community or otherwise violate this user agreement.
If you graduated with a degree from BU, you are automatically a member of the BUAA, along with nearly 300,000 of your fellow alumni. All alumni are eligible to register for Alumni Online Community membership. Use of the Alumni Online Community indicates that you accept the Terms herein and agree to abide by them.
Your privacy is a top priority to Boston University. Boston University does not share, sell or trade alumni mailing lists (including alumni email addresses) with outside corporations or organizations, except for those that have business or contractual relationships with the University (e.g., Liberty Mutual, which provides the BU insurance program). Any third parties who receive alumni information are prohibited from using or sharing alumni information for any purpose other than offering or providing approved services to alumni.
BU takes reasonable precautions to assure overall system security by monitoring security issues and industry trends, to protect the privacy of Alumni Online Community members and secure the personal information available through the Alumni Online Community. All areas of the Alumni Online Community that contain private information are housed on a secure server using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) 128-bit encryption.
The Alumni Online Community is also password-protected to allow access only to registered Boston University alumni. Although these precautions should help to protect any personal information available through the Alumni Online Community from abuse or outside interference, a certain degree of privacy risk is faced any time information is shared over the Internet. Therefore, Alumni Online Community members have the ability to selectively hide the personal information that is listed in the alumni community to be viewed by other Alumni Online Community members. This is easily accomplished by clicking on the Privacy Preferences link on your My Personal Profile page. The BUAA invites you to explore this page, review your record, and select any and all privacy settings you wish to apply. The information we do maintain about the user in the Alumni Online Community is available only under the following restricted circumstances:
- to BU alumni who have registered with the Alumni Online Community, and
- to our vendor, Blackbaud, which maintains the Alumni Online Community under strict confidentiality requirements and has earned the Better Business Bureau’s Online Privacy Seal.
To register for specific contests or participate in certain online programs, surveys or other activities, you may be required to submit personal information, such as your name, date of birth, gender, email address, telephone number, and/or other contact and demographic information related to the particular contest or activity. BUAA will not share, sell or trade personal information about its alumni or other participants in contests or other online activities with outside corporations or organizations.
Boston University takes reasonable precautions to assure overall system security by monitoring security issues and industry trends, to protect the privacy of users who enter BUAA online contests or participate in BUAA online activities. Still, you should be aware that any information transmitted via the Internet cannot be completely be protected against unauthorized interception.
BUAA will not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years of age.
By registering for the Alumni Online Community, members consent to receive emails from Boston University. Boston University will send periodic news and information to Alumni Online Community member subscribers through email. This includes newsletters such as Bostonia Extra, and invitations to BUAA events. At any time, a member may update his or her email preferences or unsubscribe in the email preferences section of the Alumni Online Community.
One of the BUAA goals is to keep you informed of the many benefits available to you. If a member authorizes Boston University (or their designated representatives) to place telephone calls and/or send text messages to your mobile device for University-related matters, the University may contact you on your mobile device. At any time, a member may update his or her mobile preferences by unchecking the permission box in the My Account Settings page within the Alumni Online Community.
BU alumni mobile applications may collect and store your contact information and other data that only you supply in feedback forms and polls within the application and service. Geo-location information will not be collected or stored. You will be prompted to review and agree to a privacy statement before installing the application on their mobile devices.
Please do not give your Alumni Online Community password to anyone. Together with your login name, your password is your key to managing your Alumni Online Community information. Your login name and password provide easy access to your directory profile, Email Forwarding for Life, career tools, and other confidential services.
Payments & transactions
Online Giving: If you believe there has been an error in your giving transaction, please contact BU Gift & Record Services at 800-800-3466.
Event Registration: If you believe there has been a payment error in your event registration transaction, please contact the Alumni Association at 800-800-3466 or email@example.com.
Some of the BUAA provide links to third-party websites, including but not limited to commercial, educational, government, and military institutions. The BUAA is not responsible for and does not control the views expressed by, the content provided by, or the privacy practices exercised by these third parties. The BUAA recommends that you review their individual privacy policies to learn more about how they collect and use personally identifiable information before submitting any personal information. Such third-party sites do not have access to any personal information or data you provide when registering or updating your account information pages within our website. While the BUAA is committed to protecting your privacy while you are on our site, it is ultimately your responsibility to protect your personal information while you are online.
As a condition of your use of the Alumni Online Community, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Boston University and the BUAA, and their respective trustees, officers, employees, and agents from, and against any and all claims, actions, suits, or proceedings, as well as any losses, liabilities, damages, attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses arising out of or accruing from your use or misuse of the Alumni Online Community.
Disclaimer of warranties
Your use of the Alumni Online Community is at your sole risk. The Alumni Online Community is provided on an “as is” basis and Boston University and the BUAA expressly disclaim all warranties of any kind.
Limitation of liability
In no event shall Boston University, including the BUAA, and its trustees, directors, officers, employees, and agents be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special, consequential, or other damages arising out of or in any way connected with the use of the Alumni Online Community or with the delay or inability to use the Alumni Online Community, or for any information, software, products, and services obtained through the Alumni Online Community, or otherwise arising out of the use of the Alumni Online Community, whether based on contract, tort, strict liability, or otherwise. The user hereby specifically acknowledges and agrees that neither Boston University, nor the BUAA, nor their respective trustees, directors, officers, employees, or agents shall be liable for any defamatory, offensive, or illegal conduct of any user of the Alumni Online Community.
Please note that Boston University and the BUAA reserve the right to change this user agreement at any time. Your continued use of the Alumni Online Community indicates your acceptance of such changes.
