FIRST: Exam Schedules

EXAM 4 will again be via an emailed fillable pdf file, which will be sent to you at one of TWO possible 3-hour exam blocks.

If you like the exam block you used from last time, there is no need to let Dr. Tolan know. If you would like to change the exam block from last time, you MUST let Dr. Tolan know.

Here is the specific PLAN for Exam 4:

Slot #2:  Tuesday April 21 9:00-12:00 noon EDT

Slot #3:  Tuesday April 21 6:30-9:30 PM EDT

SECOND: Exam FORMAT

Like Exam 3, Exam 4 will be a fillable pdf.  It will cover 9 lectures from Lecture 27 (3/30) to the first part of Lecture 35 (4/17) up until, but NOT including cholesterol synthesis.  The format of the exam is similar to prior exams.  There are multiple choice, short answer questions, fill-in, and pathway questions.

Please enter your name and course ID on the top of the first page.  Please keep your answers WITHIN the boxes provided for each question.  If you do not enter answers in these boxes, GradeScope will not grade your exam.

We found that logistic issues with just doing the exam and submitting it took anywhere from 10-40 minutes on top of just answering the questions. So, we have deduced that you will need more time, up to 3 hours for completing the 1 hour exam.

The Exam-pdf will have two parts.  Each part will be completed and submitted separately.  The first part will only need typed responses and will be completed on the computer, saved as a pdf, and submitted under "Exam 4 Part I."  The second part will have both typed and hand-written answers, and you will need to choose ONE of three options described below to complete the second part:

1. Complete Part II digitally and submit

For students who are comfortable using the Comments feature in Adobe Acrobat or drawing on PDFs using a stylus/drawing pen on their device. Save your Part II PDF and upload on Gradescope under the "Exam 4 Part II."

2. Print Part II, complete by hand, and scan to submit

For students who would like to draw structures by hand and have access to a printer. Print the "Exam 4 Part II," complete by hand, and scan the page with an office scanner or with the AdobeScan App on your phone (see note on this App at end of email). Save your Part II PDF, and upload it on Gradescope under the "Exam 4 Part II."

3. Use blank paper to complete by hand, and scan to submit

For students who are unable to digitally draw structures and do not have a printer. A supplementary page will be distributed called "Supplemental, Exam 4 Part II - Answer Entry Guide". This PDF will outline guides on how to divide your answer page into quadrants, and demonstrate where your name, Exam ID, and corresponding answers need to go on the page. Complete this by hand, then scan with an office scanner or with the Adobe Scan App on your phone (see note on this App at end of email). Save this scan as a PDF, and upload it on Gradescope under the "Exam 4 Part II - Free Page Submission."

Understand that everyone will be submitting two documents onto Gradescope: The "Exam 4 Part I" PDF, and either the "Exam 4 Part II" or the "Exam 4 Part II - Free Page Submission," depending on which of the above options works best for you.

If you are considering using options 2 or 3 for the fourth exam we would like you to practice BEFORE the exam.

ÐIf you pan to use option 2, use the attached "Mock Part II - Template"

ÐIf you plan to use option 3, use the "Mock Part II - Answer Entry Guide"

For either use the methods and resources outlined above. You can also upload these to Gradescope under "Mock Part II - Template Submission" for option 2 or "Mock Part II - Free Page Submission" for option 3. This will be set up on GradeScope and should be done by Sunday, April 19th, 8 PM EST in order to get confirmation and applicable feedback.

REGARDLESS OF WHICH OF THESE OPTIONS YOU USE, YOU MUST UPLOAD YOUR FINAL ANSWERS ON A PDF INTO GRADESCOPE BY THE END OF THE 3-HOUR EXAM PERIOD.  Please ensure that you are well prepared for the new logistics of Exam 4. Failure to do so can ultimately lead to an automatic forfeit in regrade requests for pages/answers that were not submitted properly as a result of not following instructions. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have the resources available to complete this exam as instructed, and to inform us immediately if you are experiencing any difficulties with the instructions provided above.

THIRD: Exam proctoring

Lastly, Dr Tolan and/or Medrano will be available for proctoring questions via ZOOM for the last TWO hours of each exam period.  Link will go out when exam is submitted.

Using Adobe Scan

Through the institution's license with Adobe Creative Cloud, you have access to the Adobe Scan mobile phone app. Look for and download the "Adobe Scan" on the Google Play Store (Andriod devices) or on the App Store (Apple iOS). Sign in using your existing Adobe ID connected with your BU account (you will use your BU e-mail for the first sign-in step, and then Choose "Company or School Account" to get redirected to the BU Login page using your credentials to finalize the sign-in). Using AdobeScan, take a picture once the blue alignment dots align with the corners of the paper.  Review your scan and then select "Save PDF". You can e-mail yourself your PDF using the "Share" function and then selecting "Email..." to e-mail yourself your Part II pages. On your computer, log-in to Gradescope through Blackboard and upload your PDF using the file you e-mailed to yourself. We recommend that you scan your page on a flat surface, do not bend or fold your pages, and that you hover your pages such that the page is scanned as best as possible without any distortions due to scanning at unusual angles. You can check the alignment before saving and adjust the edges with the crop function.  You can also create a PDF with several pages by scanning the corresponding pages in order, but there will only be one page fore part II of exam 4.
