That\u2019s why we recommend critical engagement with AI: understanding when to use it, when not to, and carefully checking its work.\u00a0 Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/excellence\/resources-strategies\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-at-bu-student-certificate\/\">AI at BU<\/a> course for students addresses this important topic in depth and helps you develop a personal code of conduct while using AI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>I\u2019m a faculty member. Do you have advice for setting effective AI policies in my classroom?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes.\u00a0 BU faculty have broad latitude in setting their AI policies that best align with and facilitate their pedagogical approach.\u00a0 But setting policies involves tradeoffs and considerable nuance. Please visit our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/guidance\/generative-ai-guidelines-for-classroom-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generative AI Guidelines for Classroom Use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> page for specific recommendations drawn from the shared experiences of BU faculty.\u00a0 Your unit or college may also have recommended AI policy settings.\u00a0 This topic will also be covered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/newsandevents\/ai-faculty-in-studio-workshops\/\">AI Faculty In-Studio Workshops<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>I do not support AI use in my classroom.\u00a0 But I have a concern that this philosophy might be viewed, either now or in the near future, as not aligned with BU&#8217;s AI initiatives. Also, can BU provide a technology solution to help me prevent students from using AI in my classroom?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDA&#8217;s philosophy is principled upon academic freedom and the rights of faculty members.\u00a0 Supporting those who wish to engage with AI, and encouraging AI innovation does not come at the expense of eroding the rights of others.\u00a0\u00a0AIDA fully endorses faculty members who, for example, wish to keep their classrooms AI free.\u00a0 See for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/ai-education\/calendar\/?eid=314862&amp;oid=0\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/ai-education\/calendar\/?eid=314862&amp;oid=0\" data-outlook-id=\"d9759fa6-8be9-434a-8bb0-f46a53ea3d97\">workshop on <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/ai-education\/calendar\/?eid=314862&amp;oid=0\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/ai-education\/calendar\/?eid=314862&amp;oid=0\" data-outlook-id=\"1c31cd2b-1bbc-4155-a941-3a8c20e200c6\">AI-free classrooms<\/a> that AIDA co-sponsored on Feb 4. We believe that setting\u00a0 an AI policy is a choice best made by individual instructors in concert with their local academic units.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of technology, as noted in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/guidance\/generative-ai-guidelines-for-classroom-use\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/guidance\/generative-ai-guidelines-for-classroom-use\/\" data-outlook-id=\"0c151ee3-1ffa-43d7-b46f-269afa1769b6\">guidelines for classroom use<\/a>, AI detection tools are fallible, so attempting to police student use in this way is not advisable and could create a class dynamic where faculty are policing rather\u00a0 than teaching.\u00a0\u00a0Installing a browser blocker or &#8220;turning off the Internet&#8221; to prevent AI use in the classroom is also inadequate.\u00a0 Students can download and install a local copy of AI on their laptop, or even on their phone,\u00a0 so they don&#8217;t need a browser or the Internet to access AI in the classroom. Bottom line:\u00a0 having students check their devices at the door is the only surefire way to prevent AI use in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>How can I further enhance my understanding of AI?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>AIDA Website &amp; Newsletter:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2028 All faculty and staff have full access to AIDA\u2019s website and newsletter, which provide regularly updated news, guidance, tools, educational materials, and event announcements designed for the entire university community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>IS&amp;T Training for Generative AI Tools:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Our Information Services &amp; Technology (IS&amp;T) department offers dedicated training sessions for generative AI tools tailored for staff. Read about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/aida\/2026\/01\/14\/new-terriergpt-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest update<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Isn\u2019t it true that TerrierGPT hallucinates, gets basic facts wrong and doesn\u2019t know current events?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re right.\u00a0 Using GenAI tools today comes with its own unique set of challenges, and the outputs from AI models must be reviewed and fact-checked by a human-in-the-loop with a critical eye.\u00a0 The training data of any AI model also reflects a snapshot of the world at a point in time in the past. <span>If your query requires knowledge of the past few months, integrated web search will be necessary to access those facts.\u00a0 That feature is currently available within Gemini on TerrierGPT now, and is expected for other model providers soon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>I use ChatGPT. Why would I need or want TerrierGPT?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you use ChatGPT or any other foundation model, your data is not protected.\u00a0 Providers train their models on your queries and interactions.\u00a0 Any private information or intellectual property you divulge may be revealed in response to a user query by a future version of their model.\u00a0 With TerrierGPT, your data stays within the enterprise and is not used for training.\u00a0 Your data is also kept private \u2013 BU IS&amp;T provides the same privacy guarantees with TerrierGPT queries as they do with your BU email. One key mission is to create holistic citizens ready to engage in life-long learning and service. It is becoming increasingly clear that, regardless of discipline, the workforce of tomorrow will require basic GenAI literacy and the ability to use GenAI tools to boost efficiency and creative problem solving.
