It is an excellent way to \u2018bring Africa home\u2019 for most students.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/africa\/files\/2016\/05\/Using-Visuals-to-Teach-about-Africa.pdf\">Using Visuals to Teach about Africa<\/a><\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/outreach\/resources\/teach2-2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<\/a>Visuals are key for student learning\u2014more important for learning about Africa than perhaps for any other region of the world. This resources includes two lessons plans for recognizing bias through photos and for\u00a0highlighting similarities across cultures.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"\/africa\/files\/2016\/05\/Using-Visuals-to-Teaching-About-Africa-SAMPLES.pdf\">Sample Student Work<\/a><\/strong><span>\u00a0contains student work from the two lessons discussed above and demonstrates the value of approaching\u00a0visuals in area studies in this manner.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/outreach\/teachingresources\/bu-african-artifact-map-teaching-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outreach Program Artifact Map<\/a><\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/outreach\/resources\/teach2-2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<\/a>The Outreach Program Artifact Map contains a catalogue of over 60 artifacts, that we currently hold (in our online library as well), from several regions of Africa including West Africa, Eastern\/Central Africa, and Southern Africa. Teachers can use this resource to click on any artifact on the map (images included) and find a list of resources for the classroom about the artifact\u2019s origins, background, and history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Lesson Plans<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebeckman.org\/workshop-presentations\/swahili\/\"><b>Language as Evidence: Using Swahili to Understand East African History<\/b><\/a><br \/>\nWorld history teacher Eric Beckman created a resource-rich website for educators to\u00a0teach about East African history and contemporary society through classroom study of the Swahili language. These lessons are useful for teaching about the Bantu migration, Indian Ocean trade network, imperialism, colonialism, and globalization. Includes multimedia resources and editable powerpoints and worksheets for classroom use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/africa\/files\/2015\/11\/Dower_Sundiata-Reading-Guide.pdf\"><em>Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali<\/em> Reading Guide<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nThis student reading guide features a timeline of the Empire of Mali, a character list from the reading, chapter by chapter comprehension questions,\u00a0pulled quotations, and reading activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Multimedia Resources<\/h3>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Film Clips and Trailers<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Teaching Africa Library boasts\u00a0a number of rentable, interactive, and educational\u00a0films on Africa, two\u00a0of which were produced by the Outreach Program. The final portion of the film follows the lives of children in three countries, depicting both the diversity and the universality of childhood experiences. These abbreviated clips are an excellent way of introducing the multiculturalism and linguistic diversity found throughout the continent and provide students with an opportunity to think about the way their use of a specific language(s) carries with it historical and cultural connotations as well.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Afrikaans<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this particular video, Professor Zoliswa Mali provides an example of the Afrikaans language. Afrikaans is one of the official languages of South Africa and is the third most spoken language in the country.
