Jilene A. C. Chua is Assistant Professor in Asian American History. She teaches courses related to Asian American history, fashion and U.S. empire, and global Philippines.<\/p>\n
Her research on twentieth-century Philippines intersects U.S. empire, Chinese migration, and legal history. Her current book project,\u00a0<\/span>Marginal Cosmopolitans,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>investigates U.S. colonial Philippines from the perspective of the Philippine Chinese in the first half of the 20th c. By examining how these individuals used colonial laws to overturn or challenge anti-Chinese laws, this project seeks to identify how the Philippines\u2014a diverse archipelago in Southeast Asia\u2014uncovers new relationships between race, law, property, and empire.
