Over forty years later, on May 18, he returned to AFAM to deliver the commencement address to the 2013 graduating class. As he addressed this year\u2019s graduates,\u00a0<strong>Richard Bailey, Shakora Fernandez, Naeemah Kitchens, and Shelby Walton<\/strong>, Dr. Terrell reminded the students of the value in both the journey and the accomplishment of receiving a Master\u2019s degree in African American Studies. He also offered warm words of gratitude to program founder,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Adelaide Cromwell<\/strong>\u00a0who was in attendance at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Each year the Program holds the African American Studies Alumni and Friends Essay Competition in recognition of the best graduate and undergraduate essays on the topic of African American Studies. This year Prof.<b>\u00a0<\/b><strong>Mary Anne Boelcskevy<\/strong>\u00a0awarded the winners,\u00a0<strong>Kesia Ryan-Webster<\/strong>\u00a0(CAS BA\u201914) and Shelby Walton (GRS MA\u201913) with prizes for their outstanding essays. As Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Boelcskevy also presented the African American Studies Program\u2019s minors,\u00a0<strong>Ashley Lisenby, Hannah Sager,<\/strong>and<b>\u00a0<\/b><strong>Kiera Vinson<\/strong>, with a gift and congratulations on a job well done.<\/p>\n<p>Vocalist\u00a0<strong>Melissa Hall\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0renditions of , \u201c<i>Swing Low Sweet Chariot\u201d<\/i>and\u00a0<i>\u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d\u00a0<\/i>were well received. Prof.\u00a0<strong>Allison Blakely<\/strong>,\u00a0AFAM Program Director,\u00a0presided over the ceremony, and Prof.\u00a0<strong>John Thornton\u00a0<\/strong>presented the proud students with their diplomas, and family members took photos of the smiling graduates.
