{"id":42046,"date":"2024-06-28T12:23:20","date_gmt":"2024-06-28T16:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/advising\/?page_id=42046"},"modified":"2024-06-28T15:20:06","modified_gmt":"2024-06-28T19:20:06","slug":"student-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/advising\/fellowships-scholarships\/student-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Application Dos and Don\u2019ts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DO<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>look over the list of nationally competitive scholarships early in your academic program and see which ones fit in your trajectory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>consider the opportunity that seems a stretch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>ask potential letter writers for recommendations early.\u00a0 This will give them enough time to formulate a robust letter.<\/li>\n<li>When requesting a letter of recommendation,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>DO<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>ask if the referee can write a strong, positive letter.\u00a0 Indicate your willingness to provide draft personal statements or completed works to aid their writing process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>provide information about the fellowship opportunity to letter writers.\u00a0 Some scholarships\/fellowships ask recommenders to address specific aspects of the student\u2019s candidacy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>organize your application materials in an almost-final version for internal submission.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DON\u2019T<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>look simply at the agency\/foundation deadline.\u00a0 Boston University may hold an internal competition that necessitates an earlier submission.\u00a0 This internal deadline may be weeks or months in advance of the final deadline.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>hit the \u201csubmit\u201d button for online applications unless told to do so by the Provost\u2019s Office.\u00a0 With some opportunities electronic submission is final and does not allow for revision.\u00a0<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>DO<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>submit a hard-copy to the Provost\u2019s Office for review.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>seek out the biggest \u201cname\u201d to be a letter writer.\u00a0 Someone who knows you and your work will be a better resource.<\/li>\n<li>Please<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>staple you application material or recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>And most importantly,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>hesitate to ask questions!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a href=\"\/advising\/files\/2024\/05\/Writing-the-Personal-Statment.pdf\">The Personal Statement<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>When writing a personal statement, it is important to make sure that you are addressing the key components that scholarship reviewers are looking for.\u00a0 Please review this checklist for hints into the personal statement and factors that should be considered when writing your own.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Letters of Recommendation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Please review<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/How-to-Ask-for-a\/235968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this article<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for guidance on how to ask for a recommendation letter, including tips on how to make the writing process easier for the letter writer.
