{"id":95667,"date":"2024-04-30T13:13:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T17:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/?page_id=95667"},"modified":"2026-05-29T10:49:01","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:49:01","slug":"bs-edm-applied-human-development","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/wheelock\/programs\/applied-human-development\/bs-edm-applied-human-development\/","title":{"rendered":"BS in Education &#038; Human Development to EdM in Applied Human Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>(with concentrations in Athlete-Centered Sport Leadership, Mental Performance, and Positive Youth Development)<\/h2>\n<p>The sequential BS-to-EdM program is designed for academically motivated Wheelock undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in Athlete-Centered Sport Leadership, Mental Performance, and Positive Youth Development; the program takes less time than it would take to pursue both degrees separately. After obtaining a broad foundation in education and human development at the undergraduate level, which introduces students to the framework of positive youth development, master\u2019s students will be prepared to assume leadership roles within a wide range of settings that include public and private schools, nonprofit and community-based programs, after-school athletic and summer programs, club sports, collegiate programs in higher education, and programs that serve a wide range of students including students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are linked bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree programs in which the two degrees are conferred sequentially. The program requires a minimum of 156 units overall. There are 128 units required for the bachelor\u2019s degree and an additional 36 units required for the master\u2019s degree, but students admitted to the program may count a maximum of 8 units from their undergraduate degree toward the MA. The units applied toward the master\u2019s degree must be at the 500 level or above and must be selected from the courses required for the EdM. Students will work with their academic advisors in consultation with the Undergraduate Program Director to determine which courses to take. Since students\u2019 academic profiles differ, these decisions will be made in collaboration with faculty advisors.<\/p>\n<p>Students must apply to Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs <em>before<\/em> the conferral of the bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, students apply to this Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program by the end of their sophomore year. Students who have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better by the end of their sophomore year or their fourth semester of study will be invited to apply to the sequential degree program.<\/p>\n<p>Students should consult with the Financial Assistance office to learn how entrance into the Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program might impact their financial aid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h2 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Learning Outcomes<\/h2><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students will:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop disciplinary knowledge of historical and contemporary theories, research, and practices in education and applied developmental psychology.<\/li>\n<li>Apply an ecological model of development to children and families by considering their psychological, social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and cultural needs.<\/li>\n<li>Develop policy recommendations for complicated, real-world problems facing youth and families in Boston, in neighboring communities, and beyond.<\/li>\n<li>Design and implement a community-based research project within the city of Boston that has a positive impact on a school, health organization, neighborhood, museum, or community-based organization.<\/li>\n<li>Build knowledge and develop anti-oppressive practices to disrupt unequal systems of power, privilege, and access for children and families through coursework focused on self (positionality, intersectionality).<\/li>\n<li>Use design-based thinking and learning principles to help create effective solutions to social problems that affect children and families.<\/li>\n<li>Represent BU Wheelock\u2019s equity and access mission when working with or on behalf of children and families in field-based learning experiences and research-related internships.<\/li>\n<li>Study the history, language, education, and culture of the Deaf community in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of lifespan development, pedagogy, and social-cultural diversity associated with their chosen track (Athlete-Centered Sport Leadership, Mental Performance, or Positive Youth Development).\n<ul>\n<li>Students will use that understanding to plan, implement, and evaluate programming.<\/li>\n<li>Students will apply evidence-based practice in their field.<\/li>\n<li>Students will be effective practitioners in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Students will collaborate within and across disciplines to enhance and advocate for the health and well-being of the populations they serve.<\/li>\n<li>Students will influence positive change in both their chosen field and the communities in which they work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of the field of human development, including theories of individual and family development, social psychological theories of interpersonal relationships, cognitive development with emphasis on learning, and the influence of society and culture on individual and social behavior across the lifespan.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate competencies that enable one to work successfully within the competency, ethical, and legal standards of their chosen profession in both private and public work settings.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the ability to evaluate, produce, and address problems of practice through research that furthers the knowledge base of the broader discipline of Applied Human Development.<\/li>\n<li>Expand their knowledge and skills by investigating and implementing current, research-based trends in their respective chosen tracks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2>BU Hub Requirements<\/h2>\n<p><span>All BU undergraduate students, including both entering first-year and transfer students, will pursue coursework in the BU Hub, the University\u2019s general education program that is integrated into the entire undergraduate experience.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/advising-and-the-hub\/hub-requirements-for-students\/\">BU Hub requirements<\/a><span>\u00a0can be satisfied in a number of ways, including coursework in and beyond the major as well as through cocurricular activities.
