{"id":94576,"date":"2024-04-23T06:31:10","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T10:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/?page_id=94576"},"modified":"2026-06-30T19:19:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T23:19:21","slug":"grad-cert","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/met\/programs\/actuarial-science\/grad-cert\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sidebar\">\n<h3>Admissions Information<\/h3>\n<p>For current admissions information, please visit the Metropolitan College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/contact\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Building on concepts covered in the Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Foundations, the Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Science at Boston University\u2019s Metropolitan College further cultivates the ability to \u201cthink like an actuary\u201d by developing problem-solving skills through exposure to a wide range of actuarial-related topics, notably interest theory and probability.<\/p>\n<p>Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Actuarial Science will be able to work with complex actuarial models in insurance companies, consulting firms, and related industries. In addition, they will be given sufficient background to be successful in passing <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>the following<\/span> actuarial exams <span>offered by the Society of Actuaries (SoA):<\/span> FAM, ALTAM or ASTAM, and SRM. Further, students will be well-positioned to receive an \u201cActuarial Science Foundations\u201d micro-credential from SoA after successfully passing these exams and MET MA 582 Mathematical Statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This program requires an average of 8\u201312 months to complete. Students may begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer term.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand and apply the mathematical foundations necessary for actuarial modeling within life, health, and property &amp; casualty insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Apply actuarial principles to design, price, reserve, and evaluate a variety of insurance and financial products.<\/li>\n<li>Master the quantitative techniques required for assessing risk and valuing both long-term and short-term liabilities.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the technical expertise required for SoA exams FAM (Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics), ALTAM or ASTAM, and SRM.<\/li>\n<li>Fulfill the academic requirements to achieve the Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) credential in Mathematical Statistics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Certificate Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>A total of four courses (16 units) is required, as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MET AT 531 Fundamentals of Actuarial Mathematics<\/li>\n<li>MET AT 582 Mathematical Statistics <span>for Actuaries<\/span><\/li>\n<li>MET AT 743 Regression and Time Series<\/li>\n<li>Plus one of the following:\n<ul>\n<li>MET AT 771 Advanced Long-Term Actuarial Mathematics<\/li>\n<li>MET AT 781 Advanced Short-Term Actuarial Mathematics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Admissions Information For current admissions information, please visit the Metropolitan College website.
