{"id":5532,"date":"2010-08-03T14:42:30","date_gmt":"2010-08-03T18:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/?page_id=5532"},"modified":"2026-04-21T09:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T13:05:09","slug":"adding-or-dropping-a-course","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cgs\/policies\/adding-or-dropping-a-course\/","title":{"rendered":"Adding or Dropping a Course"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/policies\/adding-or-dropping-a-course\/\">University Policy<\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>College of General Studies Policy<\/h2>\n<p>The College of General Studies follows University policy for adding and dropping standard courses.<\/p>\n<h3>Important Considerations about Dropping Courses<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>When students withdraw from a course, they may be ineligible for the Dean&#8217;s List and Dean\u2019s Circle for that term, and for CGS merit scholarships.<\/li>\n<li>When students withdraw from a class, they must discuss with their CGS academic advisor how it affects their eligibility to continue into the junior year from CGS and graduation from BU.<\/li>\n<li>CGS students who withdraw from a course may be required to make up the course before continuing into their junior year.<\/li>\n<li>Dropping a course could affect the sequencing of courses: i.e., if the course is a prerequisite for another course or if the course is only offered once a year.<\/li>\n<li>Dropping a course could affect eligibility for financial aid.<\/li>\n<li>Dropping a course could affect visa status for international students.<\/li>\n<li>Dropped courses may be made up either by overloading or by attending summer school at Boston University or elsewhere.
