While the African Studies Center is based in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/\">Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/a>, students in any Boston University graduate or professional program who fulfill the requirements outlined below, in addition to the requirements of their degree programs, can earn the certificate. Typically, no additional coursework is required because courses completed for the African Studies Certificate usually also fulfill course requirements toward students\u2019 degree programs.<\/p>\n<p>Courses with substantial African content from any of Boston University\u2019s schools may be used toward the certificate, with approval from the African Studies Director or Assistant Director.<\/p>\n<p>The African Studies Center offers several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/alp\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/financial-aid\/\">Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships<\/a> annually to qualified candidates for MA or PhD degrees who plan to specialize in African Studies and have an interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/alp\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/alp\/language-study\/\">learning an African language<\/a>. Financial support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/alp\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/financial-aid\/\">summer study<\/a> of an African language is also available.<\/p>\n<p>All students intending to complete the certificate must submit a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/files\/2016\/10\/Certificate-Program-Letterhead.pdf\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/files\/2016\/10\/Certificate-Program-Letterhead.pdf\">Verification of Eligibility for Certificate form<\/a> to the <a href=\"mailto:mdib@bu.edu\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/affiliated-faculty-old\/michael-diblasi\/\">African Studies Certificate director<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the history, politics, religions, and\/or arts of historical or contemporary Africa.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Demonstrate reading proficiency at the intermediate level in at least one African language.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Demonstrate understanding of multiple perspectives on the growth and development of society in one or more African societies, including observations and critiques that have been developed both within and outside these societies.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Demonstrate awareness of the commonalities and differences across the geographically dispersed societies and civilizations of Africa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>For a full list of approved courses both within the Pardee School of Global Studies and from the University\u2019s other schools and colleges, please consult the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/contact\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/contact\/\">Assistant Director<\/a> of the African Studies Center.<\/p>\n<p>To receive the certificate, students must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Successfully complete at least 16 unit hours of coursework from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/coursesandadvising\/\" data-gc-link=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/africa\/forstudents\/courses-3\/%20\">African Studies curriculum<\/a> with a minimum grade of B in each course.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Include courses from at least two departments or schools.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Include no more than 8 unit hours of coursework in directed study or research.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Complete a significant piece of research such as an MA or MFA thesis or doctoral dissertation, or two substantial research papers in graduate-level seminars, on Africa.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Demonstrate reading knowledge of an African language or a European language used in African Studies. This is demonstrated by passing the language proficiency test of the student\u2019s own department, where it is required.
