{"id":38351,"date":"2011-10-14T15:19:10","date_gmt":"2011-10-14T19:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/?page_id=38351"},"modified":"2026-03-11T15:39:03","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T19:39:03","slug":"bama-programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/bama-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Bachelor&#8217;s-to-Master&#8217;s Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The College of Arts &amp; Sciences (CAS) and the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences (GRS) jointly offer a number of Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs (also referred to as BA\/MA or BA\/MS programs).<\/p>\n<p>Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are linked bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree programs in which the two degrees are conferred sequentially. These Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs allow students to apply a maximum of 8 units from their undergraduate degree toward the associated master\u2019s degree. Students complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts and may apply up to 8 units from the undergraduate degree toward the master\u2019s degree for the Master of Arts or Master of Science. The units applied toward the master\u2019s degree must be at the 500 level or above.<\/p>\n<p>Students must apply to Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs before the conferral of the bachelor\u2019s degree. Students should consult with the Financial Assistance office to learn how entrance into a Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program might impact their financial aid.<\/p>\n<p>(See main<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/\">CAS Programs page<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>or main<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/\">GRS Programs page<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for programs of study that offer a BA\/MA or a BA\/MS option.)<\/p>\n<p>Students in a Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program, in consultation with their faculty advisor, develop a plan of study that focuses on greater depth and integration of concepts in the chosen discipline, while ensuring that students complete a full BA and a full master\u2019s experience, including theses or capstone components.<\/p>\n<h3>Important Notes for Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Students<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><strong>Planning ahead.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Prospective students are urged to contact the department their advisor well in advance of application to begin development of their plan of study.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><strong>Departmental requirements.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Detailed statements of departmental requirements are available from the appropriate advisor in the appropriate department.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><strong>Limited to certain areas of study.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>In most cases, the Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs restrict major fields of study to those fields in which the MA or MS is offered in the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences; be aware that the Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are limited to certain areas of study and are not available in all programs.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><strong>Dual degree students.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>The Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are not available to Boston University dual degree program students.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><strong>BA portion.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>The Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are designed primarily for students with one CAS BA major. Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program applications from students with two or more CAS majors will be reviewed by the GRS Associate Dean for satisfactory academic progress, upon a recommendation of admission from the department to which a student applies.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><strong>Restricted to CAS students, with caveats.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>The Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are restricted to students enrolled in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences.
