{"id":36830,"date":"2011-09-12T09:21:59","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T13:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/?page_id=36830"},"modified":"2024-04-20T15:25:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T19:25:15","slug":"ba-psychology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/philosophy\/ba-psychology\/","title":{"rendered":"BA in Philosophy &amp; Psychology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Philosophy\u00a0&amp; Psychology joint major is designed to enable students to acquire broad competence in both fields, including the philosophy of science, and to explore in detail a number of issues lying at their intersection, including questions about the nature of the mind, the self, cognition, knowledge, and consciousness.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<p>Students completing the program are expected to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate the conceptual ability and the communication skills needed to comprehend and investigate the central philosophical issues in the philosophy of psychology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of methods, main achievements, and major research programs in contemporary psychology.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of how philosophy and psychology have interacted historically and continue to interact today.<\/li>\n<li>Defend their own views with strong arguments but also remain open to disagreement and critique.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>All BU undergraduate students, including both entering first-year and transfer students, will pursue coursework in the BU Hub,\u00a0the University&#8217;s\u00a0general education program that is integrated into the entire undergraduate experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/advising-and-the-hub\/hub-requirements-for-students\/\">BU Hub requirements<\/a> can be satisfied in a number of ways, including coursework in and beyond the major as well as through cocurricular activities. Students majoring in Philosophy &amp; Psychology will ordinarily, through coursework in the major, satisfy BU Hub requirements in areas such as Philosophical, Aesthetic, and Historical Interpretation; Scientific and Social Inquiry; Quantitative Reasoning; Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Global Citizenship; Communication; and the Intellectual Toolkit. Remaining BU Hub requirements may be satisfied by selecting from a wide range of available courses outside the major or, in some cases, cocurricular experiences.<\/p>\n<p>At least six courses in philosophy and six in psychology, with a grade of C or higher, are required. All required courses are 4 units unless otherwise indicated.<\/p>\n<p>In philosophy the following is required:<\/p>\n<ul> \t<licas ph=\"\" 300=\"\" history=\"\" of=\"\" ancient=\"\" philosophy=\"\" li=\"\">\n<li>CAS PH 300 History of Ancient Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>CAS PH 310 History of Modern Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>Any two of CAS PH 239, 241, 265, 266, 270, 443, 465, 477, 487<\/li>\n<li>Two courses in philosophy (PH), 200 level and above<\/li>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/licas><\/ul>\n<p>In psychology the following is required:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CAS MA 115\/116; or CAS PS 211<\/li>\n<li>CAS PS 101<\/li>\n<li>One course in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/psychology\/ba\/\">Psychology Group A<\/a><\/li>\n<li>One course in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/psychology\/ba\/\">Psychology Group B<\/a><\/li>\n<li>One course in Psychology (PS) at the 300 level or higher<\/li>\n<li>One course in Experimental psychology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional requirement: at least one of the above courses must be at the 400 level or higher.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Philosophy\u00a0&amp; Psychology joint major is designed to enable students to acquire broad competence in both fields, including the philosophy of science, and to explore in detail a number of issues lying at their intersection, including questions about the nature of the mind, the self, cognition, knowledge, and consciousness.
