The program provides training in mathematics and its applications to a broad range of disciplines. It provides students the opportunity to work with faculty on research over a wide range of theoretical and applied topics. To enter, students need a bachelor\u2019s degree in mathematics or in a closely related discipline.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Ability to conduct original research in mathematics.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Ability to present research-level mathematics in a formal lecture.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Ability to teach mathematics to undergraduates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Course Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Sixteen term courses (64 units) are required. These shall provide a reasonable breadth of background in mathematics and mastery of the basic tools relevant to the research area selected.<\/p>\n<h2>Comprehensive Examination<\/h2>\n<p>Students must pass this examination by the end of their second year.<\/p>\n<h2>PhD Qualifying Examination<\/h2>\n<p>Students must pass this examination by the end of their third year.<\/p>\n<p>More detailed information is provided upon admission to the PhD program.<\/p>\n<h2>Dissertation and Final Oral Examination<\/h2>\n<p>Candidates shall demonstrate their abilities for independent study in a dissertation representing original research or creative scholarship. A prospectus for the dissertation must be completed and approved by the readers, the Director of Graduate Studies, and the Department Chair\/Program Director. Candidates must undergo a final oral examination in which they defend their dissertation as a valuable contribution to knowledge in their fields and demonstrate a mastery of their fields of specialization in relation to their dissertation. All portions of the dissertation and final oral examination must be completed as outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/degree-requirements\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/policies\/degree-requirements\/\">GRS General Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>A PhD student leaving the program will obtain an MA, provided they have completed eight graduate courses (32 units) and passed the comprehensive exam.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The PhD in Mathematics program trains students for careers in academia or industry.
