The coursework guides students through the foundations of environmental planning; current theories and practices of sustainability; methods for managing and optimizing important primary resources such as energy, food, and water; urban risk management techniques beyond climate change; and the social, political, legal, and economic aspects of the global green movement.<\/p>\n<p>This certificate is appropriate for individuals currently in roles as sustainability professionals as well as those seeking to enter this expanding and high-demand field. Architects, facilities managers, city planners, and IT experts have the opportunity to fill gaps in their existing knowledge, whereas those just beginning careers in these and related fields will gain the foundation to make green thinking central to their work from the outset.<\/p>\n<p>This program requires an average of 8\u201312 months to complete. Students may begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer term.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Analyze sustainability practices to address contemporary environmental challenges, emphasizing the integration of ecological, equity, and economic dimensions within urban development.<\/li>\n<li>Develop and implement strategies for climate-adapted urban futures, demonstrating an understanding of sustainable planning principles and resilience in policymaking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Admissions Information<\/h2>\n<p>For current admissions information, please visit the Metropolitan College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/admissions\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/admissions\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Certificate Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>A total of four courses (16 units) is required, as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\"><span>MET UA 549 Planning Sustainable and Climate-Adapted Urban Futures<\/span><span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">MET UA 617 Actionable Sustainability<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Two electives from the following list:\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">MET UA 510 Selected Topics in Urban Affairs<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">MET UA 526 Multimodal Transportation Planning and Design<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">MET UA 527 Feeding the City: Urban Food<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">MET UA 592 Land Use and Planning Law<\/li>\n<li>MET UA 598 Foundations of GIS and Spatial Analysis<\/li>\n<li>MET UA 613 Urban Design and Development<\/li>\n<li>MET UA 619 Urban Transportation Policy and Planning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With advisor\u2019s approval, students may choose to take courses outside of the electives list.<\/p>\n<h2>Transfer of Units<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Graduate Certificate in Applied Sustainability can be earned as a stand-alone certificate or combined with the Master of Science in Urban Affairs (MSUA) and Master of Science in City Planning (MSCP) degree programs. Elective course units taken as part of the certificate may be applied to the MSUA or MSCP degree programs, but not to other certificate programs.
