History degree students gain skills applicable to many careers, including the ability to criticize, organize, and synthesize extensive materials, and to write with clarity and precision.<\/p>\n<p>Few fields of study better prepare one to navigate the demands and manage the needs of our society and our world. Career options for the bachelor\u2019s degree in History include teaching, politics and government, law and legislation, medicine and research, publishing, landmark preservation, and more.<\/p>\n<h2>Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<p>Students receiving the BLS in History degree are expected to demonstrate the following skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">Knowledge of past societies and familiarity with patterns of social, political, economic, and cultural change; and appreciation of how historical perspective can enrich understanding of contemporary developments and problems.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">The capacity to recognize how varied sources can be used as historical evidence, and to analyze the role of evidence in the construction of historical arguments and memory.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">An understanding of the challenge of weighing multiple perspectives and evaluating the merits of competing interpretations.<\/li>\n<li data-gc-list-depth=\"1\" data-gc-list-style=\"bullet\">The ability to construct persuasive and evidence-based arguments about historical change and present them in written formats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note:\u00a0Students wishing to pursue a History degree program may have to cross-register and take upper-level history and\/or related courses in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences at day tuition rates.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Admissions Information<\/h2>\n<p>For current admissions information, please visit the Metropolitan College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/admissions\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/met\/admissions\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Degree Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Candidates for the bachelor\u2019s degree at Metropolitan College are required to complete a minimum of 32 courses (128 units), including Hub requirements, major requirements, related courses, and electives.<\/p>\n<h3>Hub Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>All BU undergraduate students, including transfer students, will pursue coursework in the BU Hub, the University&#8217;s general education program that is integrated into the entire undergraduate experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/advising-and-the-hub\/hub-requirements-for-students\/hub-requirements-for-transfer-students\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/advising-and-the-hub\/hub-requirements-for-students\/hub-requirements-for-transfer-students\">BU Hub <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/advising-and-the-hub\/hub-requirements-for-students\/hub-requirements-for-transfer-students\/\" data-gc-link=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/advising-and-the-hub\/hub-requirements-for-students\/hub-requirements-for-transfer-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requirements<\/a> can be satisfied in a number of ways, including coursework in and beyond the major as well as through cocurricular activities. Students majoring in History may ordinarily, through related coursework in the major, satisfy BU Hub requirements in Historical Consciousness, Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy, Research and Information Literacy, and Critical Thinking.<\/p>\n<h3>Major and Related Courses<\/h3>\n<p>A total of 14 courses (56 units), completed with a grade of C or higher, is required.<\/p>\n<h4>Required Courses<\/h4>\n<p>Choose 10 courses (40 units). MET HI 101 and HI 102 History of Western Civilization are recommended as first courses but are not required. Five of the courses (20 units) selected must be at the 200 level or above. All courses must be chosen with the advice and approval of the department coordinator.<\/p>\n<h4>Related Courses<\/h4>\n<p>Choose four courses (16 units) at the 300 level or above in anthropology, art history, economics, English literature, geography, international relations, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, or sociology. Students may also choose MET CJ 352 Courts, Society, and Criminal Procedure, or CAS CL 321 Greek History. Courses must be chosen with the advice and approval of the department coordinator.<\/p>\n<h3>Electives<\/h3>\n<p>Electives are chosen with the advice of an academic counselor.
