Public health is a diverse field that draws on expertise from many disciplines, including math, science, law, ethics, psychological and brain sciences, sociology, political science, and communications.

Bachelor’s-to-master’s programs are linked bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in which the two degrees are conferred sequentially. Students complete all degree requirements for the (128-unit) BS and all requirements for the (42-unit) MPH. Up to 12 units of graduate-level School of Public Health coursework completed in the final two years of undergraduate study may be applied both as elective units toward the BS and as units toward fulfillment of requirements for the MPH. Students will take a minimum of 30 units while enrolled as a master’s student. Careful planning and full-time enrollment can result in students receiving both the BS and MPH after a total of five years of study, rather than the usual minimum of five-and-a-half years. Students may complete the MPH degree on a part-time basis if desired. The BS is awarded at the completion of all BS requirements; the MPH is awarded once students have completed all MPH program requirements.

Learning Outcomes

Please visit the MPH Bulletin page.

Requirements

Students accepted to the BS-to-MPH program will be required to meet certain standards and undergo further review prior to entering the SPH for their final year of study. For their undergraduate major in Sargent, they must maintain the minimum GPA graduation requirement and fulfill all other requirements. Additionally, they must meet academic standards outlined in the SPH Academic Standing Policy for all SPH courses. Upon completion of the BS degree, the student’s overall record will undergo a review by the SPH staff, who will make the final decision regarding a full transition to the School of Public Health. This review may be referred to the SPH Admissions Committee.

By the time of graduation from Sargent and as a condition of entry into SPH, students must have completed the following:

Foundations of Public Health & Integrated Core Curriculum

16 units of coursework, up to 12 of which may count toward the MPH.

SPH PH 517 Quantitative Methods for Public Health (4 units) (prerequisite for MPH; does not count toward the degree)

SPH PH 718 Leadership and Management in Public Health (4 units)

SPH PH 719 Health Systems, Law, and Policy (4 units)

SPH PH 720 Individual, Community, and Population Health (4 units)

Admissions Information

Students applying to the BS-to-MPH program will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to public health as evidenced by their previous coursework, personal statement in the SOPHAS application, and past employment and extracurricular activities. Students pursuing an undergraduate minor in public health must drop that minor if they are accepted and choose to enroll in the BS-to-MPH program. Sophomore students have until June 1 (fall MPH application deadline) to submit their applications, and junior students have until December 15 (spring MPH application deadline) to submit their applications and may apply prior to taking any courses at the School of Public Health.
