Seminar: Topics in Hispanic Literature

May be repeated for credit if topic is different. Three topics are offered in Fall2021. Section A1: Ruins & Ruinologies. The Third World as Ruins: Departing from Cuban Writer Antonio Jos? Ponte, this course studies the "debris of the present." The relationship between ruins and memory, catastrophe and hope, urban space and literature, cinema and ethnography in Latin America. Section B1: Languages of Exile. Readings from the essays, memoirs, and poetry of Luis Cernuda, Jorge and Claudio Guillen, Rafael Alberti, Maria Teresa Leon, Maria Zambrano, Zenobia Camprubi and Juan Ramon Jimenez. Section C1: From Literary Theory to Theories of Culture. This course presents an historical survey of literary theory as it emerged from and outgrew the study of literary texts, from the early modern period to the twentieth century and beyond. Section C1 satisfies departmental theory requirement.
