4+1 Program: BM in Performance/MM in Education

Students admitted to the 4+1 program complete all requirements for a Bachelor of Music degree in music performance and a Master of Music degree in music education. The receipt of both degrees normally qualifies a student for Initial Teacher Licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Students enroll in the 4+1 after matriculating into either the BM in music performance or BM in music education. Admittance to the 4+1 is dependent on support from both faculties. Students in the 4+1 program typically complete the Bachelor of Music degree in the fourth year, then finish MM coursework and student teach in the fifth year.

The 4+1 program requires completion of the program of study specific to the Bachelor of Music degree candidates seek. In addition, students complete courses in preparation for Initial Teacher Licensure and the following required courses for the MM in Music Education:

  • Theoretical and Cultural Applications in Music Education (4 credits)

4+1 students must also complete two out of three of the following courses (8 credits):

  • History & Philosophy in Music Education: Perspectives and Practice
  • Psychology & Sociology in Music Education: Perspectives and Applications
  • Introduction to Music Education Research

All students in this program are required to complete a capstone curriculum development project. ME 799 Curriculum in Music Education: Vision and Design fulfills this requirement.
