Leave of Absence and Withdrawal

College of Fine Arts Policy

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students work directly with the University Service Center and adhere to the Withdrawal, Leave of Absence, and Reinstatement policy for Boston University.

Graduate Students

Graduate students (on campus) can take up to two semesters of leave of absence in either separate or consecutive semesters. Leaves of absence beyond two semesters must be petitioned to the Graduate Studies Committee (School of Music) or the directors (School of Theatre, School of Visual Arts). All on-campus students petitioning for an extended leave should use the College of Fine Arts Petition Form and work with the Manager of Student Records. Students wishing to withdraw from Boston University will be held to the University’s withdrawal and tuition refund schedule and work with the Manager of Student Records to complete the official withdrawal.

Online Graduate Students

Online graduate students may take up to four semesters of leave of absence in either separate or consecutive semesters. Online music education and art education students must submit the electronic Leave of Absence Form located within Online Campus and the CFA websites below. Students wishing to withdraw from Boston University will be held to the University’s withdrawal and tuition refund schedule and work with the Academic Administrator for Online Programs to complete the official withdrawal.
