Science Education

In the 21st century, science and technology permeate the lives of everyone in society, not just scientists and engineers. Consequently, it is more important than ever that all young learners have access to high-quality, enriching STEM education. The most effective science teachers are those who have a strong background in the sciences that they will teach, a passion for inspiring students, and expertise in pedagogy and the science of teaching and learning. Additionally, given the challenges that our society faces, it is more important than ever that we have science teachers who work to break down barriers and lift people up—who celebrate the intrinsic value of every single person. Leveraging innovative and inclusive pedagogies, we aim to train an inclusive and diverse STEM community that encourages and supports everyone.

The BA in Science Education program in the College of Arts & Sciences at Boston University offers students a rigorous and comprehensive pathway to a degree in science education. Students specialize in one main area (biology, chemistry, or physics) but take a cadre of courses in multiple areas of science. Additionally, a core of education courses through the Wheelock College of Education & Human Development ensures that all graduates are ready for the classroom. Students graduating with a BA in Science Education from Boston University’s College of Arts & Sciences will receive initial licensure to teach at the high school level in the state of Massachusetts.
