Combining classic sociological and anthropological readings on the city with contemporary urban ethnographies, the course explores different definitions of the urbanism; the stratification of urban space by gender, race and poverty; securitization and gentrification as well as community responses to such processes; and the intersection of global, transnational and local identities in claiming rights to the city. Participants will conduct their own mini-ethnographic projects on a Boston neighborhood of their choice. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Social Inquiry I, The Individual in Community, Research and Information Literacy.
