JO 502 A1:?Freelancing Storytellers will become proficient in conducting research, developing sources, interviewing, drafting queries, writing story-drafts, shooting photographs and video, and managing social media to promote the resultant?freelance?work. ?JO 502 B1:?Journalism in polarized digital society Topics covered include the nature of the hybrid media system; media information production, and citizen information reception, under polarized political conditions; the significance of social media platforms and their algorithms to the flow of political information; and growing efforts to subvert ("hack") productive national dialogue. ?JO 502 C1: Introduction to Science Journalism Students will experiment with different writing forms and will learn to identify topics for timely coverage. You will also read and discuss the work of a range of writers, and hear from a number of?scientists and science journalists, whose ideas and work will serve both as a model and an inspiration.JO 502 D1: Stardom? This class will train students to think of?stardom?as a field of critical engagement and cultural play. In the first half, we will discuss the history of film?stardom?from the silent era to the 21st century. In the second half, students will learn about and start to master the different practical journalistic approaches to writing about?stardom?and modern fame.? JO 502 E1: Power of Narrative Students who are interested in volunteering for the Power of Narrative conference (March 20-22, 2020)? have the option to enroll in this class, which will spend the months leading up to the conference analyzing the work of the 2020 conference speakers and studying narrative journalism in a way that allows for a more fruitful conference experience. Students in the class will be matched with a conference speaker to study and will subsequently be that speaker's point of contact for the weekend.
