You will receive an invitation from our Office to complete the exchange application <strong>once we receive confirmation from your exchange program coordinator<\/strong>. The information below will assist you through the process and answer some common questions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Additional Application Components<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<p>All exchange student applicants must complete the <strong>Exchange Student Application<\/strong>\u00a0and submit the following supporting documents:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Official grade transcript in English<\/li>\n<li>Essay (1 page):\u00a0Why are you interested in attending Boston University?<\/li>\n<li>One letter of recommendation from a faculty member (University Instructor) Instructors who want to maintain confidentiality, may submit their letters directly to ssuorsa@bu.edu.<\/li>\n<li>Photocopy of your valid passport information page. We recommend that your passport be valid for as long as possible into the future, but at minimum, it should always be valid at least six months beyond any anticipated date(s) of entry into the U.S.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proof of English Proficiency<\/strong>: If our application asks you to submit English proficiency test results, please refer to the Boston University International Admissions website for <a href=\"\/admissions\/apply\/international\/application-instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TOEFL\/IELTS\/DET requirements<\/a>. Click on \u201cEnglish Proficiency.\u201d Please note that these are the minimum requirements and exceptions for lower scores cannot be made. Test date should not be more than two years old. Results should not be more than two years old. This requirement is waived for applicants from most schools in countries whose native language is English.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In addition to the above required documents international students who do <strong>not<\/strong> have U.S. citizenship must also submit the documents listed below:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/files\/2024\/03\/ISSO-ISDF-updated-3-22-24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>International Student Data Form<\/strong><\/a>:<br \/>\nPlease write or type your name, birth date, and birth place on this form exactly as they appear on your passport, or the form may be rejected.<br \/>\nPlease print, <strong>SIGN<\/strong> with a blue or blank pen, and scan\/upload this form to your application.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proof of Financial Eligibility<\/strong> showing evidence of at least US$15,400* per term of study at BU. Instructions and requirements for the proof of financial eligibility can be found on p. 1 of the International Student Data Form. It may be helpful to view a sample <a href=\"\/abroad\/files\/2025\/09\/bank-letter-sponsor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parent Bank Letter<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"\/abroad\/files\/2025\/09\/bank-letter-student.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Bank Letter<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/files\/pdf\/Sponsor-Cert-Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parent Support Letter<\/a>. Please note that your proof of financial eligibility must:\n<ul>\n<li>Be written in English<\/li>\n<li>Include the date the document was created\/signed<\/li>\n<li>Be original documents with original stamps\/signatures<\/li>\n<li>Show proof of at least USD $15,400* per term of study at BU.<\/li>\n<li><em>*<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/undergraduate-estimate-of-expenses\/\">Estimation<\/a> based on 2025\/26 academic year figures.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Exchange students who have a valid U.S. passport do not need a visa to enter the United States. When you come to the U.S. to begin your studies at Boston University, <strong>you are required to enter the U.S. using your American passport. Do not enter the U.S. using any foreign passport you may possess. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Holders of J-1 student visas may remain in the USA for up to 30 days after the end of the program.\u00a0 If your passport will expire before the end of the program, or before you wish to leave the country within that 30 day window, you should photocopy your current passport bio page for your BU Exchange Application, and apply to renew your passport immediately.\u00a0 Students are still experiencing delays scheduling appointments and having their visas issued in many cities, so you must take all measures to ensure that you have a valid passport in hand as soon as you are eligible to apply for your visa, usually in mid-June for Fall programs and early\/mid-December for Spring programs.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Application Deadlines<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>March 15<\/strong>\u00a0for Fall (September) Admission<br \/>\n<strong>October 1<\/strong> for Spring (January) Admission<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Academic Calendar<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Please review Boston University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/calendars\/\">academic calendar<\/a> to plan your term(s) at BU. Please note that each term will have a mandatory orientation one week prior to the start of classes. Students should plan to be settled in Boston before the first day of orientation.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Estimated Expenses<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/undergraduate-estimate-of-expenses\/\">estimated costs<\/a> for spending a term at Boston University.\u00a0 You will pay tuition and fees to your home university, so you may disregard those amounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Please note the proof of finances requirement, explained above, in the Exchange Student Application section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Acceptance Process<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>If you are accepted as an exchange student at BU, you will receive an email notification approximately 3 weeks after the application deadline has passed.\u00a0 Acceptance materials<span>\u2014<\/span>including information on BU class registration, housing applications, health insurance, and orientation<span>\u2014<\/span>will be sent to you by email in the weeks following your acceptance. Please check your email regularly, including your spam folder.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not a U.S. citizen, the Study Abroad Office will submit application documents #4-7 to our International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) for processing. The ISSO will issue your Form DS-2019, which you will need to apply for your J-1 visa. ISSO processing can take up to 6 weeks. When your Form DS-2019 is ready, it will be e-mailed directly to you with instructions for applying.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations on being nominated by your home institution to study at Boston University for a term or a full year!
