Each program page provides additional information on student housing, including information on physical accommodation, what meals are offered, and single-room availability.<\/p>\n<p>Boston University Study Abroad is committed to working with students with disabilities who may need special accommodation to participate successfully in our programs. However, we cannot guarantee that facilities, technology, or support services will be available at each program location to the same extent as on the BU campus. If you are considering studying abroad and have a disability, please email Boston University Study Abroad at\u202f<a href=\"mailto:abroad@bu.edu\">abroad@bu.edu<\/a>\u202fas early as possible to discuss site-specific accommodation possibilities. BU Study Abroad works closely with BU\u2019s office of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/disability\/\">Disability &amp; Access Services<\/a>, which evaluates requests for disability-related accommodations.<\/p>\n<h2>Types of Housing<\/h2>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Program Residences<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\">\n<p>Program Residences can be buildings owned or rented by Boston University, and students can usually expect to live with other program participants.<\/p>\n<p>At some of our sites, a limited number of single rooms may be available for an additional charge. If you are requesting a medical single, you must be approved through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/disability\/accommodations\/4675-2\/\">BU Disability &amp; Access Services<\/a>. Medical singles generally do not incur an additional charge.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">University Dormitories<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Dorms are provided by a local university partner. Students can expect to experience communal living with other students, domestic or international, enrolled in the university or the study abroad program.<\/p>\n<p>In certain locations, a limited number of single rooms may be available for an additional charge. If you are requesting a medical single, you must be approved through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/disability\/accommodations\/4675-2\/\">BU Disability &amp; Access Services.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Please review individual program pages to see additional room information.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Local Homestays <\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Some programs arrange accommodation with host families. Homestays help students further develop language skills and adjust to life in a new country. Households chosen to participate in the program represent a wide range of incomes and situations. Students typically eat some meals with host families.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Housing Policy<\/h2>\n<p>Boston University Study Abroad participants are required to live in program-sponsored housing when the program fee includes the cost of housing.<\/p>\n<p>Boston University Study Abroad participants may request an exception to this requirement if they fall into one of the categories below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan to reside with a family member <\/strong>who confirms their housing details and intention to host the student, and whose primary residence\u00a0meets the following requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The family member has resided at the location for at least 12 consecutive months immediately preceding the program start date.<\/li>\n<li>The residence is within a 45-minute commute of the host university\/BU academic center or site office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Are married and choosing to live with their spouse.<\/p>\n<p>Have a religious need that they have demonstrated cannot be met in program housing.<\/p>\n<p>First-year students may request an exception to the housing requirement if they can meet the following additional requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They must reside locally with a parent. In the case of legally separated or divorced parents, \u201cparent\u201d means either a parent with legal custody or a parent providing more than one-half of a student\u2019s total financial support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To request an exception as explained above, students must complete the online <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonu.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_3lzDKBNGi0iLzUO\">Housing Exception Form <\/a>by the following deadlines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fall term\/Academic Year participants: May 15<\/li>\n<li>Spring term participants: October 15<\/li>\n<li>Summer term participants: March 15<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>A Study Abroad staff member on site will follow up with each application, including contact with you and the family member or relevant party with whom you propose to live. Timely responses to this follow-up by all parties is important and will be a factor in the consideration of the petition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students whose housing exception requests are approved will receive <strong>partial credit<\/strong> of the relevant Study Abroad Program Fee.<\/p>\n<p>Students whose housing exception requests are not approved are required to live in program housing in order to participate in the program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students on study abroad programs can generally expect to live in a community with fellow students and are encouraged to embrace the housing standards of their host country.
