{"id":86,"date":"2011-05-18T15:34:28","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T19:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/236magazine\/?page_id=86"},"modified":"2011-05-18T15:34:28","modified_gmt":"2011-05-18T19:34:28","slug":"wagner","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/236magazine\/past-issues\/issue2\/wagner\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry: Mark Wagner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Here is the Plot<\/h2>\n<p>Here is the plot: A boy built a home<br \/>\nWith a girl who gave him money.<br \/>\nShe wouldn\u2019t say where she found it, though<br \/>\nThe money was awfully dirty.<\/p>\n<p>The word is a plot: a suitcase.<br \/>\nIn the suitcase are trousers, papers.<br \/>\nOn the papers are colorful words.<br \/>\nOne says \u201ctomorrow,\u201d though it\u2019s unclear<\/p>\n<p>Whether tomorrow happened or not.<br \/>\nSo they construct the plot from one<br \/>\nThing no one remembers but what<br \/>\nThey will all someday separately know.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what they know so far:<br \/>\nIt\u2019s important not to love the oppressor.<br \/>\nIf nothing happens tomorrow<br \/>\nThey might have found this out for naught.<\/p>\n<p>And now for some fancy description<br \/>\nTo keep you hooked while the plot gets thick:<br \/>\nForty-two ex-servicemen<br \/>\nAre dusting the handle for prints.<\/p>\n<p>Just so you know: The suitcase gets picked.<br \/>\nThe tenderfoot in charge of watching it<br \/>\nCouldn\u2019t resist the almond croissants.<br \/>\nZing: He comes back and is staring at zilch.<\/p>\n<p>In the distance What\u2019s-Her-Name starts to sing<br \/>\nAs if skin\u2019s afire. The place clears out.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s when the train starts to roll.<br \/>\nA hundred hurried souls scramble off,<\/p>\n<p>Among them one never here before<br \/>\nWho hands out pencils hoping for change.<br \/>\nSoon the whole place empties<br \/>\nAnd the singing rises again. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Finally it boils down to this:<br \/>\nDo you love this place we call earth?<br \/>\nShould you, in fact, take advice from a mole?<br \/>\nOr go for a roll in the sack?<\/p>\n<p>Or should you turn to abstract things<br \/>\nLike law and sounds and classroom design?<br \/>\nNo telling. The bag with the clue is gone.<br \/>\nThe girl who lost her foreskin asks,<\/p>\n<p>Have you seen a suitcase, kinda like a bag?<br \/>\nThe boy begins to laugh and then<br \/>\nBuilds a home with the money though<br \/>\nThe money was awfully dirty.<\/p>\n<h2>Lantern Fish<\/h2>\n<p>Oceans swallow the rivers<br \/>\nAnd trees. The water ascends.<br \/>\nEven that which has been long dead<br \/>\nIs gracefully dying again.<\/p>\n<p>But not lantern fish<br \/>\nHovering in a lightless surf,<br \/>\nA lamp hanging over its eyes.<br \/>\nIt illuminates its turf.<\/p>\n<p>O bobbing 0 and an<br \/>\nOmission within the black,<br \/>\nA reader huddled with a book,<br \/>\nAn alien in a sack.<\/p>\n<p>Far below the land\u2019s silt shelf<br \/>\nLantern fish light-full slides.<br \/>\nBy following its own self<br \/>\nLantern fish follows the light.<\/p>\n<p>MARK WAGNER teaches at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts.
