QUARTZ<\/h1>\n

The voices of children playing ball on the blacktop
\noutside my house, I hear
\nthem through the window as I sit listening<\/p>\n

to whatever sounds reach me:
\nthe air conditioner, the tiny yet steady
\nalmost noiseless tick of the grandfather clock\u2014<\/p>\n

listening, I hear
\nviolence of the urge,
\npornography<\/p>\n

from the computer and my hands
\nputting it on before I know what it is I\u2019m doing:
\nman being beaten by the woman.<\/p>\n

Young thing, lost to habit
\nbefore habit
\nshould have broken you.<\/p>\n

I understand
\nand wish
\nto continue.<\/p>\n

Then, as now, if you share yourself
\nyou\u2019re bound to interludes
\nof someone who would take<\/p>\n

and accept and inflict. In the desert
\nif it should rain,
\nthere is a record remembering the day for years.<\/p>\n

Rose quartz. Lithium silicate.
\nChrysocolla. Amethyst. Malachite.
\nOn top of my windowsill, I keep a line of stones.<\/p>\n
