\nWe ate them in the field by the stream
\nafter old man Jocika passed. Funerals,
\nsomething we were good at. Someone
\nmade a joke about Jocika\u2019s mangled hands,
\nthe way he would pretend to eat his fingers,
\nmaster of the noses & thumbs game.
\nHe used to make us laugh. He used to tell us
\nstories about how he lost his fingers, each
\nfinger a different story, and each story
\ndifferent every time. The ring on his ring finger
\nchoked his finger to death; he woke one morning
\nto a missing thumb, searched for days, found
\nit in his backyard, riddled with ants; he won
\nfirst place in a pinky finger beauty contest,
\nwas asked to sit still for a mold, couldn\u2019t wait
\nlong, so he cut his pinky off, donated it,
\nand now it sits in all its glory in a museum
\nin Helsinki. His contribution to western society.
\nWe grew up when we realized what actually
\nhappened to his hands, and some time after,
\nhis heart burst, the same way strawberries do
\nwhen you bite into them just right.<\/p>\n

\nWear your moon dress tonight,
\nthe one that makes people believe
\nin women on the moon, of the moon.
\nWe\u2019ll go skiing without our poles,
\nglide right into the ocean,
\nlaugh all the way down. Poseidon
\nwill greet us with wine & stories,
\nand you\u2019ll ask him to take us
\nto Atlantis, but he\u2019ll tell you,
\nMoon Girl, you don\u2019t belong in the city,<\/em>
\nand you\u2019ll tell him he\u2019s not a very
\ngood host. So we\u2019ll leave, climb
\na ladder all the way up our favorite
\ntree, and I\u2019ll count how many
\ntimes you say the word rise<\/em>
\nbefore you rest your head on a branch
\nand ask me if I think our tree
\ncan feel your skin the way you
\ncan feel its bark. I\u2019ll take your hand,
\ndraw a balloon in your palm,
\nkiss you goodnight<\/em>, and watch you float
