Funerals,<br \/>\nsomething we were good at. Someone<br \/>\nmade a joke about Jocika\u2019s mangled hands,<br \/>\nthe way he would pretend to eat his fingers,<br \/>\nmaster of the noses &amp; thumbs game.<br \/>\nHe used to make us laugh. He used to tell us<br \/>\nstories about how he lost his fingers, each<br \/>\nfinger a different story, and each story<br \/>\ndifferent every time. The ring on his ring finger<br \/>\nchoked his finger to death; he woke one morning<br \/>\nto a missing thumb, searched for days, found<br \/>\nit in his backyard, riddled with ants; he won<br \/>\nfirst place in a pinky finger beauty contest,<br \/>\nwas asked to sit still for a mold, couldn\u2019t wait<br \/>\nlong, so he cut his pinky off, donated it,<br \/>\nand now it sits in all its glory in a museum<br \/>\nin Helsinki. His contribution to western society.<br \/>\nWe grew up when we realized what actually<br \/>\nhappened to his hands, and some time after,<br \/>\nhis heart burst, the same way strawberries do<br \/>\nwhen you bite into them just right.<\/p>\n<h2>Monday<\/h2>\n<h6>Originally published in <em>Barely South Review<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWear your moon dress tonight,<br \/>\nthe one that makes people believe<br \/>\nin women on the moon, of the moon.<br \/>\nWe\u2019ll go skiing without our poles,<br \/>\nglide right into the ocean,<br \/>\nlaugh all the way down. Poseidon<br \/>\nwill greet us with wine &amp; stories,<br \/>\nand you\u2019ll ask him to take us<br \/>\nto Atlantis, but he\u2019ll tell you,<br \/>\n<em>Moon Girl, you don\u2019t belong in the city,<\/em><br \/>\nand you\u2019ll tell him he\u2019s not a very<br \/>\ngood host. So we\u2019ll leave, climb<br \/>\na ladder all the way up our favorite<br \/>\ntree, and I\u2019ll count how many<br \/>\ntimes you say the word <em>rise<\/em><br \/>\nbefore you rest your head on a branch<br \/>\nand ask me if I think our tree<br \/>\ncan feel your skin the way you<br \/>\ncan feel its bark. I\u2019ll take your hand,<br \/>\ndraw a balloon in your palm,<br \/>\nkiss you <em>goodnight<\/em>, and watch you float<br \/>\naway, moondancing as you go.<\/p>\n<h5>Milica Mijatovi\u0107 is a Serbian poet and translator. Born in Br\u010dko, Bosnia and Hercegovina, she relocated to the United States where she earned a BA in Creative Writing and English Literature from Capital University.
