About

I’d like to welcome you to the Boston University Creative Writing Program web site, on which we hope you’ll find a good deal of information about us and our workings.

To those of you thinking about applying to the program, I’d only like to say that we are perhaps the most venerable of all such MFA programs and certainly one of the finest. A few years ago “The Atlantic Monthly” ranked our faculty and our alumni among the top five percent of all creative writing programs in the country and the program itself among their list of top ten. With our single year of residence and scholarly component, we are decidedly different. We are not the place for a leisurely discovery of yourself as a writer or person. What we are—well, I hope you’ll get a slightly better sense of that in my letter.

Please note that beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, the MFA in Playwriting will be separate from the Creative Writing Program in Fiction and Poetry. Playwriting will now be a three-year program housed at the Boston Playwrights’ Theater, but it will still be a part of the BU English Department.
