EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS. Reading by Ayesha Siddiqa from her new book Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan's Military Economy. Dr. Siddiqa was Director of Naval Research for the Pakistan Navy,
the first civilian and the first woman to hold that position in
Pakistan's defense establishment. She is currently a Ford Fellow and
was the 2004-2005 'Pakistan Scholar' at the Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars. Co-sponsored with BU Women's
Studies. |

with Leaders: Barbara Simons, a leader in national discussions on
internet voting. Dr. Simons has served as President of the Association
for Computing Machinery (ACM), the nation's oldest and largest
educational and scientific society for computing professionals. Among
her many awards, Simons is a Fellow of ACM and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science. She was selected by Open
Computing as one of the "Top 100 Women in Computing" and Science
Magazine featured her in a special edition on women in science. Open
to WISE faculty. 12:00--1:00 Kenmore Conference Room, 9th floor of One

"The Research Life: Work/Family Issues for Scientists and
Engineers." Program. This day long conference should be of interest to faculty, graduate
students, administrators and others concerned with making it possible
for academic scientists and engineers to have work lives and family
lives that are positive and fulfilling. Speakers will include:
Stephanie Coontz, sociologist, historian of the family and author of
"The way we never were" and "Marriage: A history" who will speak on:
"New Frontiers: Why work-family issues are the next frontier for the
gender revolution," Jody Heymann, public health expert and author of
"The widening gap" and "Forgotten families," whose talk is entitled
"Removing the blinders: How do the work and family lives of American
scientists and engineers stack up globally?" and Robert Drago, labor
economist and author of "Striking a balance: Work, family, life" who
will speak on "Gender and family in the academy." Talks on productive
individual strategies, family strategies, and management strategies as
well as ideas for institutional reform will be followed by
brainstorming sessions on these topics. This conference is free and
open to the public, but pre-registration is suggested. Please email
our dedicated rsvp line (wisersvp@bu.edu) to reserve a place at the
conference and receive updates about the conference schedule.

Leaders: Andrea Dupree, Senior Astrophysicist
at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and
a nationally recognized leader in ultraviolet astronomy. She obtained
the first image of the surface of a star using the Hubble Space
Telescope and recently led a team that discovered fast hot winds from
very young stars, which could profoundly affect their evolution and
the environment of surrounding planets. Open to WISE faculty.
