Ethical dilemmas of doing research in high surveillance environments

As policing of activist groups and communities of color becomes increasingly insidious in U.S. society, concerns about state surveillance have significant implications for social and educational researchers.

In this talk Dr. Ali will explore some of the ramifications of police infiltration and monitoring of Muslim secondary and college students on his research. Drawing upon 24 months of fieldwork in New York City, Dr. Ali examines how surveillance affected interpersonal relationships within these communities utilizing notions of panoptic gaze and governmentality.

Through this discussion he will explore questions including: How might we conduct research with students and communities in an ethical manner? and How can we work with communities that are surveilled in ways that do increase their risk?

Through this conversation we will explore some of the implications of this research for students developing community responsive research projects.
