Bachelor of Science in Deaf Studies
The BS in Deaf Studies at Boston University affords students the opportunity to develop insights into, and genuine appreciation for the culture, contributions, and contemporary issues related to Deaf people in the United States.
Core coursework provides a foundation in the historical and cultural background of the Deaf community. Students entering the Deaf Studies program will explore a range of educational, social, cultural, linguistic, and psychological issues and their application to Deaf people as individuals, as a community, and as a linguistic and cultural minority. Our multidisciplinary approach led by a strong faculty, many of whom are Deaf, provides in-depth training that prepares undergraduate students for a number of exciting career options in fields related to working with Deaf people, including working in education, counseling, social justice, human services, linguistics, and other professions requiring competency in American Sign Language. With this foundation, students frequently go on to graduate study well-equipped for specialized training.
Our bilingual approach to Deaf Education reflects the notion that all Deaf children should be exposed to American Sign Language (ASL) as a natural and accessible first language; English is acquired as a second language through reading and writing using a range of visual strategies; Deaf people must influence the educational, cultural, and social systems that impact their lives. We strive to lead the way in the promotion of innovative scholarship and high quality training to ensure that Deaf individuals and their teachers realize their full potentials.
