Escort Security Services is a division of George Sherman Union Administration established in 1980 to enhance the safety and security of the Boston University Community, while encouraging increased usage of campus facilities at night. The student staff provides safe walks and van rides, performs safety checks of blue-light emergency phones and residence halls, and operates the Late Night Study Center in the General Classroom Building. Escort Security Services is based in the George Sherman Union and serves all campus buildings and areas along Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street.

The Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance has launched
its new web site. The site looks forward to the grand opening of BU's new
Fitness and Recreation Center in March, 2005. The site features images and
information about the new facility, as well as all registration information
for all the department's physical education classes, non-credit courses, and
family programs, as well as Intramural and Club Sports. The site also allows
for constant news updates and sports league information. When the new facility
opens, the site will be equipped to take reservations for courts, equipment,
massages, personal training and facility use.

Survey of University Home Pages

As part of the project to redesign the Boston University home page, Networked Information Services (NIS) conducted a thorough review of 56 university home pages. NIS undertook this effort to better understand how the decisions it was making about the design and construction of the new BU home page concurred or conflicted with the decisions that other universities make. NIS discovered many areas of common ground and few surprises. Still, the findings are useful and interesting. NIS conducted the review last fall, so some of the information is out of date. It plans to update this survey next month.
Research Web

The Research Web contains about 400 pages of news and information about research conducted in all disciplines at Boston University. The site has undergone a substantial redesign, reorganization, and general overhaul. Dynamic, automatically updated feeds of research news and research briefs are now featured on the Research home page. Both of these content databases are fully searchable. You will also find information on funding, resources, awards, ethics, and policies.

With over 400,000 web pages at Boston University, a good search tool plays a crucial role in helping people quickly find information. The Office of Information Technology has launched Google as its search service, replacing Ultraseek, in use since 1998. The University and the tens of thousands of people who use the BU Web each day will benefit from this switch.
Forums@BU

Forums@BU, an interactive web-based bulletin board, is now available to all academic and administrative departments. A department can use forums to communicate with its students, faculty, staff, and others. Within its forum, a department can create an unlimited number of subforums. For example, a department could set up a subforum for its career services office, for a conference or seminar, or for communications with its faculty. Departments can link to any forum or subforum directly from their websites. Forums@BU can help create new connections with constituents. It's about communication and community, not technology.
