Description

In April of 2005, OIT added a Flash Media Server to University Web services. Streamed Flash video has the widest reach across browsers and platforms, so almost everyone can view it without installing new software or plug-ins. That means no more headaches over encoding videos in multiple formats for a wide range of media players, each with different production tools, learning curves, and playback quirks -- not to mention links on your pages -- if you want to stream video to users for playback in software they already have.

Also, the Flash Media Server provides the greatest security to protect against redistribution among current streaming servers, and offers the most flexibility for those who want to create rich media applications.

In this class, we'll cover all the basics for streaming videos, from reviewing supported source video types and exporting Flash video to embedding the video in a web page and uploading the necessary files. As time allows, we'll discuss strategies for streaming video to viewers who have different speed Internet connections, and briefly look at finished examples of more advanced applications that the Flash Media Server can serve.

  • understand the advantages and disadvantages of streaming Flash compared to other methods of delivering video
  • know how to export Flash video (FLV) files using Flash Media Encoder from supported source videos

  • know with where to upload your files and how to register your video with the Flash server in order to stream your videos on the Web
  • have strategies for troubleshooting if your Flash video fails to stream
  • be familiar with finished examples of ActionScript-based applications the Flash Media Server can serve
