Course Roles and Views

Summary of different access levels and related priveleges.

WebCT

Title Created By Duties/Privileges
Designer System Admin Full course privileges, including:
  • adding/deleting/hiding course content
  • exporting and importing backups
  • creating new student accounts
  • creating assessment tools
  • setting privileges, such as students' viewing their own grades, allowing guests to create their own accounts.
Each course can have only one designer account. If there are multiple instructors who need to add content, they must share this single account.
Student Designer Student accounts are course-based, so students have a separate account for each course in which they're enrolled.
Guest Designer Guests have the same privileges as students.
Grader Designer Graders have access to assessment tools and can create and grade quizzes.

  • adding and deleting course content
  • creating new student, guest, TA, and course builder accounts

  • changing grades
Teaching Assistant System Admin, instructor in the course, teaching assistant in the course, course builder in the course. Appears to be identical to instructor, although this isn't specified in documentation.
Course Builder Same as above Access to all functions in the Control Panel except the gradebook.
Grader Same as above Access to assessment tools, gradebook. Graders do not have access to the drop box (contrary to documentation).
Student Same as above Each student has a single account on the CourseInfo system. However, the instructor must enroll them.
Guest Same as above Guests can view all course content. They cannot access or use the Communication and Student Tools.

In WebCT, users have a separate account for each course in which they're enrolled.

In CourseInfo, each user has a single account. This account can have different roles in different courses. For example, in one course the account might have TA privileges. In another, it might have only Student privileges. In another, it might have no access at all.

In addition to the normal user roles, CourseInfo has an system's administrative roles. Each account can also have a single administrative role associated with it. For example, if an account has been given the administrative role of Course Creator, this user has access to course management functions in ALL courses on the system. Currently, only NIS staff have these roles.
