Fonts

We employ a small palette of fonts on the pages we created or modified for this redesign. We selected fonts specifically designed for use online. We selected fonts for their legibility at small sizes. We selected fonts in common use at Boston University.

The Official Font

Font example

Bembo is the official font of Boston University. On the home page, we used Bembo in the Boston University banner at the top of the page. We used Bembo for the text over the seal.

On the main pages of the BU Web, we used Bembo on the graphic icon that returns you to the home page.

The Display Fonts

For the Search and News navigation bar on the home page, we used Humanist. This font is included in many software products, such as Coreldraw.

Font example

For page headings, we used Trebuchet. Trebuchet is specifically designed for crisp and clean display on monitors. This font is freely available from Microsoft.

For navigational menus appearing below these headings, we used Verdana. It too is specifically designed for crisp and clean display on monitors. It is also slightly more legible than Trebuchet at these sizes and is freely available from Microsoft.

The Body Font

For body text, we have not specified a font. Thus, the user's default fonts will display. For small type (HTML font size 3 and smaller), we have selected sans-serif fonts, which are more legible than a serif font at these sizes. Page signatures are one place where we use sans-serif fonts.
