Maintain Continuity

Changes introduced in a redesign should neither confuse nor disorient existing users. While the new home page looks very different from the previous one, the differences are actually few.

We shortened the names of some items and renamed others. We also organized the ten links into two distinct and logical groups, described below.

The group above focuses on
helping visitors find people,
content, events, and news.

The group to the right
focuses on the University.

Finally, there is one important change we did not make. We deliberately chose to retain the photograph from the previous home page as the first image for the new home page. Since this new page is the first revision in 30 months, it will certainly surprise users and possibly startle them. However, that familiar photograph will reassure them that they are on the home page of the Boston University Web.
