Firewalls Setup
The default settings of the built-in Windows Firewall will not interfere with Blackboard Vista. Only if you have changed the settings on your Windows Firewall, or have installed another firewall, will you need to follow the instructions below to allow Blackboard Vista access to your computer.
Select your version of Windows
Windows Firewall
- Click the start button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
- Click the Control Panel icon.

- Click on the Windows Security Center icon. If you do not see the Security Center icon, you may need to switch from Classic View to Category View. You can do this by clicking the link that says "Switch to Category View" in the upper-left column of the Windows Control Panel.
- Click on the Windows Firewall icon.
- Click the "Exceptions" tab.
- Click the "Add Port" button.

- In the "Name:" text box type Vista.
- In the "Port number" text box type 443.

- Make sure the "TCP" radio button is checked.
- Click "OK" to save your changes.
- Repeat steps 6 - 10 for each of the following ports:
- TCP: 1935, 5038, 5997, 5998, 5190, 5191
- Repeat steps 6-10, selecting the "UDP" radio button instead of "TCP" in step 9 for the following ports:
- UDP: 5998, 5190, 5191, 33434, 16384
- Once you have made these changes, proceed to the Live Classroom Set Up.
Windows Firewall
- Click the start button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
- Click the Control Panel icon.

- Click on "Allow a program through Windows Firewall. In the window that appears asking for permission, click "Continue."
- Click on the "Add port..." button.

- In the "Name:" text box type Vista.
- In the "Port number" text box type 443.

- Make sure the "TCP" radio button is checked.
- Click "OK" to save your changes.
- Repeat steps 4 - 6 for each of the following ports:
- TCP: 1935, 5038, 5997, 5998, 5190, 5191
- Repeat steps 4 - 6, selecting the "UDP" radio button instead of "TCP" in step 9 for the following ports:
- UDP: 5998, 5190, 5191, 33434, 16384
- Once you have made these changes, proceed to the Live Classroom Set Up.
Other Firewalls
If you are using a firewall that is not part of the native Windows operating system, including ZoneAlarm, you may not be able to immediately access Blackboard Vista. You should look for pop-ups from your firewall asking if you want to allow Blackboard Vista access to your computer. In this case, you should click "Allow always" or the equivalent, which will keep the firewall from continually trying to block Blackboard Vista.
