How to Update Your Java
Those students and faculty using Windows computers can now update their previous versions of Java to the latest Java version (Java 1.6).
Mac OS X computer users can and should use the latest version of Java for accessing Blackboard Vista. Updating Java for a Mac OS X computer is outlined in our Mac OS X Java page.
Please follow the instructions below for updating your Java to version 1.6. If you are experiencing any difficulties using the Java Console's "Update" feature, you can remove your current version(s) of Java and replace it with Java 1.6 per the instructions on our Java page.
Windows XP
- Close out all open programs and web browser windows (i.e. Firefox and Internet Explorer).
- Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen.

- Click Control Panel. You may have to click Settings and then Control Panel.

- Double-click your Java icon. If you don't see this icon, you may need to switch from Category View to Classic View. You can do this by clicking the "Switch to Classic View" link in the left column of your Windows Control Panel.

- This will open up your Java Control Panel. In the Java Control Panel, click the Update tab and then click the Update Now button.

- You should see a notification in the right-hand side of your task bar informing you of new updates to download. Click on this Java notification icon.

- When you see the screen below, close out the Java Control Panel opened in Step #5 and the Windows Control Panel opened in Step #3. Click the Install button to begin the download of the Java updates.

- You will see an indication on the right-hand side of the task bar that the Java update files are downloading to your local computer. When the download is complete you will see a notification in the task bar again. Click on this notification to begin the installation process.

- Click the Install button to begin the installation of the Java update.

- You will see a screen asking if you would like to install an online file backup tool with a 30-Day trial period named "Carbonite". We would recommend un checking the box labeled "Yes! Install Carbonite Online Backup 30-Day Free Trial" to avoid installing this product. Click the Next button to continue the installation.

- During the update, you may see a screen asking you to install an "MSN Toolbar" (or another type of toolbar: Google, YAHOO, etc). If not, proceed to step #12 below. If you do see this option, un check the check box for installing the tool bar and proceed with the installation.

- You will see the window below while the latest version of Java is installed on your computer. This process may take a few minutes.

- You will see the window below indicating that the installation is complete. Click the Close button to finish the installation.

- Lastly, run the Browser Check to ensure that your computer's Java has been updated.
Windows Vista
- Close out all open programs and web browser windows (i.e. Firefox and Internet Explorer).

- Next click Control Panel.

- This will open up your Windows Control Panel window. You will see the Java icon under either Programs or Additional Options.

- Click the Java icon. If the Windows User Account Control security window appears asking for permission to run the program, click Continue.
- Click on the Update tab and then the Update Now button.

- You should see a notification in the right-hand side of your task bar informing you of new updates to download.

You may also see the Windows Vista User Account Control indicator prompting your for permission to allow the Java update program to run. Click on this icon and click the Continue button to allow the Java installation to proceed.

- When you see the screen below, close out the Java Control Panel opened in Step #5 and the Windows Control Panel opened in Step #4. Click the Install button to begin the download of the Java updates.

- You will see an indication on the right-hand side of the task bar indicating that the Java update files are downloading to your local computer. When the download is complete you will see a notification in the task bar again. Click on this notification to begin the installation process.

- Click the Install button to begin the installation of the Java update.
