Disk Space for Audio and Video Files

We recognize that audio and video files require much larger amounts of disk space than standard Web pages or graphics. To accommodate the needs of developers, we will provide additional disk space for audio and video files on request.

The additional disk space is allocated in http://www.bu.edu/av/ rather than your personal, departmental, or course site. This ensures that it's backed up correctly and can be expanded easily. It also ensures that you have access to the Real media streaming server.

If you plan to publish AV content, you should Request an A/V Directory. If your A/V content is not yet encoded but you already know the format and length of your A/V content, you can use the following guide to estimate how much space you will need:

Format Approximate size
for one minute
Compressed audio (Real, QuickTime, mp3 1 MB
Compressed audio/video (Real, QuickTime) 2-3 MB
Uncompressed audio (.wav) 15 MB
Uncompressed audio/video (.avi) 80 MB

We strongly encourage developers, including faculty who have incorporated audio or video into courseware sites, to request and use space in http://www.bu.edu/av/ to store all of their multimedia content .
