Once you have created HTML, graphic, and other files for your Web pages, you transfer them from your computer to a Web server. The people.bu.edu server (people.bu.edu) hosts personal and group pages, and the central server (www.bu.edu) hosts academic and administrative departments.

Windows and Macintosh have different file transfer protocol (FTP) programs for uploading files from a computer to a server.

Windows users should use Dreamweaver or Absolute FTP, which is available for free from Boston University. You can also use WS_FTP.

Macintosh users should use Dreamweaver or Fetch, which is free.

If you need help, please visit the PCSC Web or send mail to pcsc@bu.edu.

Uploading Files using Dreamweaver MX

rule

  1. Follow the instructions in Dreamweaver MX: Introductions - Defining a Local Site.
  2. Follow the instructions in Dreamweaver MX: Introductions - Defining a Remote Site, using the value below for the corresponding question:

Host name / FTP address of server:

    people.bu.edu
    Students, Faculty, Staff, and Groups
      Central Server
    Departments and Academic Units
    type: people.bu.edu   type: webdev.bu.edu

    Folder on the server:

    people.bu.edu
    Students, Faculty, Staff, and Groups
      www.bu.edu
    Departments and Academic Units
people.bu.edu publishers should normally leave the directory field blank. The server will automatically locate your correct directory, which will look something like this:
    /01/u/s/username/

Note: if your web publishing program does not permit you to leave the directory field blank, you can enter the path /web/people/x/y/xyzusername
x is the first letter of your directory name
y is the second letter of your directory name
xyzdepartment is your full directory name.

    For example:
    /web/people/s/m/smith/ for the username smith
    /web/people/f/r/fred/ for the username fred

The people.bu.edu server will then automatically redirect your request to the correct directory.

      /web/x/y/xyzdepartment
x is the first letter of your directory name
y is the second letter of your directory name
xyzdepartment is your full directory name.

    For example:
    /web/r/e/registrar
    /web/h/i/history

    FTP Login:

Enter your username (the portion of your e-mail address that appears before the @ sign.)

    FTP Password:

    Enter You your Kerberos password.

  3. Follow the instructions in Dreamweaver MX: Introduction - Synchronizing to put your files on the server.
