New Reports

In early February 2002, we upgraded the software used to generate Site Reports. Below is a summary of some interesting new features.

Statistics

  1. There are four new statistical reports:
    • Referring URL - This new report lists the URL of the page that a visitor was on prior to going to one of your pages. Now you can see exactly which pages around the world drive traffic to your site and how much traffic they drive. This report is a more detailed version of the companion Referring Site report, which lists the URLs of sites (but not the individual pages) that drive traffic to your site. Note: Once a visitor comes to your site, they are likely to visit other pages within your site. Consequently, the report contains many URLs of your own pages.
    • Search Word - This new report lists the words that visitors type at search sites prior to going to your site. The search site might be Google, the local BU Search page, or even a search box within your own site. If someone searched for a phrase, such as "Boston University Admissions," you won't see the phrase in the report. Instead, each word would be listed separately and individually. You can view the complete list of search engines covered by this report.
    • Browser Summary
    • Browser Report -These two reports list the browsers that visitors use when viewing pages at your site. The Summary contains a list of browsers only. The Report contains exact versions of browsers used, platform, etc.
  2. The number of displayed results in many reports has been expanded.

  3. Other miscellaneous changes:
    • File sizes now shown in bytes, megabytes or gigabytes where applicable.
    • In the Directory Report, subdirectories are indented and the report shows cumulative results.
    • In the File Type Report, file types (e.g., .html, .htm) are grouped together.

Broken Links

  1. There is one new report for skipped URLs, which lists links that the checker cannot follow, such as links that lead to password-protected areas.
